Called here on a lovely sunny day so looked great and views fantastic. Spoke to Joseph who is a resident sort of enthusiast. He told us lots about the stones and made it a really interesting visit. Spent about an hour and a half talking to him. Definitely worth a visit. Parking space right at the stones and only a short drive from the a75

Found the cairns very easily, good signage and plenty of space to park. Very short walk to the first set of chambers, and a little further down the track is a second chamber. Worth a visit.

Walked up to the site and there was a man with a camera who accosted us (politely). He said his name was Joseph and had been to the site most days for the last 10 years making measurements, mainly of the track of the sun's shadow made by a couple of the standing stones. He was a man with an obsession. We arrived at the local noon (about 13.12) and this was when the sun was highest and the shadow shortest. He said that at the vernal equinox, the shadow coincided with a point in a rock set in the ground. All very interesting. Left one hour later with heads buzzing.

We went to have a quick look at the cairn (didn't realize there were 2 until we got there and started chatting to a man on the site). It was actually this man who made the difference to our visit. A few other people mentioned the American man and I am certain it was him as he said he has been there for 26 years. He pointed out to us where sunset hit the rocks at the longest and shortest days as well as the spring equinox - which we just missed by a few days, there is always next year. Also showed us that the spacing between the stones on either side of the entrance are equal and that there are equal numbers of stones eithr side of the entrance. He gave us some valuable information about how the site interacted with the landscape around it. Really interesting stuff which we would not have known had we not bumped into him.

My partner and I both visited here and had a lovely walk up the hill to see Cairnholy 1 & 2. It is well worth a visit. The information boards are very informative and the views are amazing up there.
