Visited Bistro Gourmand for the first time and had a great meal there with friends. Very good food in a simple surrounding, sitting outside in a lovely small courtyard off what is a pedestrianised street in the evening.

The menu is straightforward and uncomplicated but with some very good food. We both had Méli-Mélo Tomatoes (multi-coloured tomatoes with a local cow's cheese not dissimilar to Mozzarella) and then Grilled Lotte with baby vegetables and a Coeur de Côte de Veau with Girolles. All of these were excellent, freshly prepared and well served. Washed down with some good Red Cote de Rhone and Roanaise Rose. Others had what looked like (and was reported to be) an excellent Burger de Charolais - simple but very good. Nice range of deserts as well including my favourite, La Faisselle de Vache à la crème.... Yum!

Good value, too; 3 courses for E29 and altogether with 3 bottles of wine coming to Euro200 for five people.

Top tip - make sure you book. They seem to serve on one sitting per table all evening and so many were being turned away even though tables appeared to be free.

We came across this little gem in Charlieu. It was a long time since I had such a nice meal, even by French standards.
For 27 euros, you have a three course meal with a great selection of dishes for each courses. There are cheaper menu (16 euros) with a smaller selection but we did not go for that.

I had salmon for my starter which was cooked three different ways and superbly presented in a funky glass. My husband had the beef carpaccio and he was truly impressed. We both had the veal with girolles for our main and it was massive (both meat and mushrooms...you could not buy so many girolles for that price in the UK, never mind having them with a big slab of meat in a restaurant!). We both had brie de meaux with truffle for dessert.

Presentation was amazing - photos enclosed - breads and icecreams are home-made!!!

Kids menu was, I think, a tenner for main (chicken in a cheesy sauce and chips and veg) and with home made icecream. It was made fresh with good quality ingredients and equally well presented. Did not have time to take a picture, The kids loved it so much.

As for the service, we were made feel very welcome, even with small children.

Only one warning. The place is not big and they do not seem to let the place get full. We arrived at 12 on market day and got a table no problem but half hour later, the waitress kept on turning people away because they were full (even if there were plenty of empty chairs). May be safer to book in advance or drop in the morning to let them know what time you ll be arriving.

If you ever in the charlieu area, this place is really worth stopping by.
