This is our third trip to the Secrets Vallarta Bay resort. We haven't had a bad experience the entire time, in fact, the entire staff at the Unlimited Vacation hotels go out of their way to make this an excellent experience. Our pool waiter, Fernando, and the Preferred Club Bartender, Benj.. were there for what ever you needed. Carmina was more like our personal hostess with a warm welcome and they even decorated our bed with "Welcome Back Home" in colored rice. This is our 5th resort in the chain we have visited and plan on visiting more with the consistent level of service.

As members of the Unlimited Vacation Club, we expected more. This was our 1st Anniversary trip and we were eligible for a room upgrade upon arrival. However, we did not receive an upgrade because there was no availability. We could have however, upgraded to a room for an additional $350 a night. This was unacceptable. Being members, we should not have to pay an additional $350 a night to upgrade.

On another note, we were promised a lot of things from the staff of the UVC in which nobody ever came through with their promises. If we were to compare the service of the UVC staff at this resort against other UVC resorts, we would have to say the service was not up to expectations.

The resort itself was nice but the service was hit or miss. When it came to requesting something for our mini fridge on a daily basis, we always had to call twice (almost every day) before getting what we requested.

Overall, we would rate the resort itself at 4 out of 5; the UVC staff we would have to rate them at a 2.5 out of 5.

We went with 5 other couples and had a wonderful time. The resort itself is beautiful. The resort staff are very courteous and helping. Thank you Jose at the Market cafe for your excellent service and patience with our large group. The Japanese restaurant and French restaurant were good. The red snapper at the Oceana was great. Visited the spa and enjoyed the hydrotherpy. Not very impressed with the facial though. The nightly shows were great quality. Will definitely go back.

We were so disappointed by this hotel. We stayed for 2 weeks. We were pushed to upgrade our room to find we were right next door to a rowdy group that the hotel knew there were problems with. We were hounded to go to their "not time share" meeting even to the point that they rang our room at 8am asking why we weren't going to their presentation when we had already declined!! From Thursday to Monday the resort becomes a club18 to 30 with groups of hen, stag and large gatherings arriving at the hotel to get absolutely hammered, run down corridors banging on doors at 3am in the morning. It was so loud by lunchtime until the evening around the pool area that there was no getting away from the music being blared out on massive speakers around the resort.

AWFUL, DISSAPOINTING, WILL NEVER EVER GO TO THIS OR ANY OTHER SECRETS RESORT EVER AGAIN.

Avoid, avoid, avoid.

As a fan of the Secrets Resorts, I'm disappointed to have to give this location just three stars.

On the positive side, the front line staff made every effort to make our stay excellent. The waiters, bartenders and housekeeping were wonderful, especially the waiters at the pool and beach.

There were just a few big problems with our stay, but the large number of small problems really added up to quite a bit of frustration. At first, we shrugged off the small issues, they were after all just small annoyances. But as time passed and we were disappointed again and again, it started to become the focus of the vacation.

This is billed as an adults only resort. It's not. It's one hotel split into two. Adults only on one side and families on the other. Three of the four specialty restaurants are in the family hotel next door. Much of the evening entertainment is on the family side too.

Trying to enjoy the beach was impossible. The ocean floor is pebbly and painful to walk on. There are many, many vendors on the beach. They constantly pestered us to buy something from them. The same people offered the same wares, interrupting again and again.

So we tried to move to the pool. By 8am all the lounge chairs were taken. People would place a towel and a book on the chair and then walk away. The sun is strong and yet there are not enough umbrellas to shade the loungers.

We didn't find the food appetizing. The choice of breakfast foods is odd, the restaurants did not open when they said they would. Even the simplest of things, getting a smoothie from the smoothie bar, was quite a feat!

Whenever we asked for something, no matter how simple, we were told it couldn’t be done. A minor example is that when we asked for an additional bag of M & M’s in our mini bar, we were told only one was permitted.

We had purchased the Preferred room. Don’t bother. It was very disappointing. They said we would get premium alcohol, and we did. But only in their windowless basement of a bar. The best place to relax in the resort is the main lobby lounge. It is a treat. But you cannot get the promised premium alcohol there. They told us we would get a concierge. We did. But the answer to just about every question was no, or they didn’t do that, or they didn’t know. Many more reasons to not pay for the preferred than we can discuss here.

It was beyond our comprehension how the other Secrets Resorts we have been to were so perfect and this one fell so very short. We have stayed at Secrets Resorts in other places and loved them and had the most wonderful time. We would go again to those every year if we could. But Secrets Vallarta Bay is somewhere we will never go to again and if you go, take your patience hat and some low expectations with you.

Room Tip: They all face the pool and the beach. Anything above the third floor is good.
