Very lively and bustling. Everything is pretty crammed in which makes it all the better. We had some ceviche and after my kids had a chocobanana dipped in sprinkles.
Should be a stop for anyone visiting Guanajuato for the first time.

So it isn't the most comfortable or fancy meal you'll have. It's a marketplace. However, the food was super fresh and cheap! Had some amazing breaded shrimp, my boyfriend had a torta and we both really enjoyed it. Was maybe my second best meal of the trip... And one of the cheapest. Keep in mind portions are large. I had tons left over.

If this is your first mercado enjoy it - it's full of photo ops

If you're here for the food - don't bother - it's bland and frankly every meal we've had there and that friends have had there has the same flavor as the canned beans we buy at La Comer.

What this mercado has that makes it interesting are what I call "The Sirens of Guanajuato".

Like the sirens that called out to sailors in the old Greek myths, or shady ladies calling from the second floor, these women will wave their menu cards and shout over each other for your attention then lure you in for more bland food.

But the shouting and waving and our transgender friend on the 2nd floor who will call and flirt with everyone make this a video and photo op.

Certainly worth a visit and do try some of the delicious food stalls.
We had pulled pork on delicious bread and tried some of the exotic fruits we never have in the States.

The entrance of the Mercado Hidalgo is impressive - a high arch of pink sandstone. Pass though and you find an arched metal roof, very high to permit some air flow. There are many different types of stalls selling cooking ingredients, fresh fruit and vegetables and meat. At the east end are many inexpensive eateries. We purchased some dried spices and will return for some other shopping.
