It’s easy to see why food-conscious locals are going nuts over this Israeli restaurant. In an area famous for Mexican and Mex/Med fare, Merkava offers something new, executed with flair and served with polished warmth.
For breakfast, we recommend either the tangy shakshuka strewn with feta cubes or the traditional Israeli egg meal, whose many accompanying tidbits include fork-friendly pineapple jam so piquant and delicious, I bought extra to take home. If we weren’t flying back tomorrow, I’d return to try the latkes.
For dinner, we ordered tapas style and were surprised by the hearty quantities: roasted cauliflower turned out to be a whole head (and was the least of the dishes we chose). The special hummuses sounded so tempting, we ordered two: one topped by juicy and flavorful shredded lamb, plus a Mexican-accented version topped with guacamole and deep fried chicken fat. Factor in the tender pasta pillows with a lamb garnish, and you can see why we had no room for dessert.
Come to Merkava but pace yourself. It’s one-of-a-kind.
