It’s easy to see why food-conscious locals are going nuts over this Israeli restaurant. In an area famous for Mexican and Mex/Med fare, Merkava offers something new, executed with flair and served with polished warmth.

For breakfast, we recommend either the tangy shakshuka strewn with feta cubes or the traditional Israeli egg meal, whose many accompanying tidbits include fork-friendly pineapple jam so piquant and delicious, I bought extra to take home. If we weren’t flying back tomorrow, I’d return to try the latkes.

For dinner, we ordered tapas style and were surprised by the hearty quantities: roasted cauliflower turned out to be a whole head (and was the least of the dishes we chose). The special hummuses sounded so tempting, we ordered two: one topped by juicy and flavorful shredded lamb, plus a Mexican-accented version topped with guacamole and deep fried chicken fat. Factor in the tender pasta pillows with a lamb garnish, and you can see why we had no room for dessert.

Come to Merkava but pace yourself. It’s one-of-a-kind.

Very nice petit place to have a good dinner. Their garlic hummus is to die for. Prices are reasonable and the menu overall has great plates. You need to ake a reservation to avoid waiting list as place is small and most of the crowded.

Called in advance. Receptionist said there were no reservations but tables were available. Arrived 15 min. later, no tables. Told us we had to wait ½ hr for reservations to show up. While standing outside a young pedestrian tried to get a a glass of water from a large dispenser set on the sidewalk at the restaurant door. The hostess chased him away saying it was exclusive for customers. This one block away from one of the buildings that fell during the recent earthquake. Apparently nothing was learned from the tragic event. We walked out disgusted with the hostess´s attitude. They don't deserve my patronage.

We walked past Merkava and were intrigued, and so despite feeling ambivalent (shouldn't we be filling up on wonderful Mexican food?) we stopped in. This was one of my favorite meals of our visit. The mint juices were refreshing, the humus excellent, and the whole roasted cauliflower was delicious and made this vegetarian feel a bit like a carnivore. The whole experience was wonderful. The restaurant was a bit fancy for a toddler, but fortunately, we were there early and there weren't too many other customers. The toddler, by the way, loved the cauliflower.

Great selection of warm dishes and appetizers. We had the 14 part appetizers, a hummus and two warm dishes and that was enough for four people. Everything was quite good, but they kept bringingnus only one piece of bread for four people, which was quite annoying. Other than that highly recommend this place.
