This is not a high-end hotel, but offers solid value for it's class. Located on a small, but very busy road. However, once inside, there is a large courtyard, and the road noise diminished greatly. It is apparent that all of the rooms open to the courtyard, or one of it's hallways. No air-conditioning, but none needed during my stay. Fan worked well. Cross ventilation in my room was poor, so I had to keep the door open to circulate in fresh air. Bed was comfortable, bathroom facilities worked efficiently, and the rooms were kept spotlessly clean. Breakfast was adequate, heavily on the Mexican version : buffet on weekends, orders taken on the other days. I booked a tour of Monte Alban through the front desk, and the tour was excellent. The front desk staff were not the warmest or friendliest, but provided service when asked.

The hotel is a short walking distance from some great restaurants, the zocalo, and the pedestrian streets. I recommend the hotel, and would stay there again when I return to Oaxaca.

Stayed here two weeks and thoroughly enjoyed it. Managers, cooks and cameraras are unfailingly kind, attentive, and helpful. Breakfasts are delicious, and so large that I soon cut back to two meals a day: breakfast at the hotel and a comida corrida in town in late afternoon. As noted elsewhere, the street itself is noisy and noisome, but the thick walls of the hotel keep it cool and quiet. Cross the street onto Calle Bravo and it is a short walk eastward to Santo Domingo, the cultural museum and the spectacular ethno-botanical garden. Equidistant to the south are the Zocalo and the markets. Or walk up behind the hotel to the Calle de la Union and follow it downhill to the beautiful Plaza de la Danza.

Room Tip: I stayed on the 1st floor and liked it. Can't speak to the qualities of 2nd floor rooms.

Stayed for 6 nights and loved the proximity to the Zocolo and the tourist walking street Acala. The rooms are pleasant, well appointed and maintained. The air circulation is lacking since the windows open into the interior square. The staff were all very pleasant - I found the night attendant Raymundo to be bothered and far too stern when any questions were asked. I did not feel very welcome when I arrived after a long day of travel.
There is a very lovely roof top terraza with lounger chairs and a table with umbrella and chairs. Only problem is that the street below is so busy with bus and auto travel the fumes waft up to the terraza limiting its use for this traveller.
Breakfast came with the room cost. It was abundant and tasty. Hot water was spotty or non-existent when the hotel was occupied.

Room Tip: stay towards the back of the hotel where the road noise is minimized

The hotel is on a busy street in Oaxaca ( no parking ) Great location for walking the city. 5 mins to great food,10 mins to the Zocolo ( Central Park ) and a few more to the Big market places . Room was basic but OK ! king size room on 2nd fl, for $40-50 including breakfast in the courtyard. Staff was very helpful. Not many english TV stations. Computers in the courtyard for guests, WIFI in rooms.Nice outside patio area to enjoy with nice view of the city. Check it out !

Room Tip: best rooms are 2nd floor rear 1st floor rooms are darker. No elevator in building.

This was our second stay in this hotel in Oaxaca, the last ~5 years ago in April, and both times we were delighted with everything about the hotel. It is not a luxury hotel, but it is quite nice, with large, quiet rooms, comfortable beds, a patio on the second floor that overlooks the city, even though the hotel is only a few blocks from the zocalo, and a delicious Mexican breakfast. The breakfast included in the modest price has a variety of fresh fruit (melon, pineapple, papaya), fresh fruit juices, an assortment of hot offerings generally including various eggs (I think they can also be special ordered), delicious coffee (and tea), yogurt, granola, breads and jams, and more. We heard a talented guitarist on 3 of the 4 mornings we dined, and one of us bought a lovely embroidered blouse and some children's clothing from a local artisan who, we discovered only later while we were touring, is a grantee of the En Vie microloan program in Oaxaca. The staff is friendly and helpful. The rooms have neither heat nor air conditioning, but do have fans and were especially comfortable during our visit this January. In April, I remember needing to open the window in the evening to cool down the room, before we closed it to go to bed. The area of the hotel is safe and located well for all the activities we had planned. I look forward to our next stay at the Aitana.
