The owners of the hotel are present and always ready to help and make your stay great
The rooms are clean and cozy and the common areas are colorful and comfortable, great value for money. Very well located on a walking distance of the walking street and markets

As well as all of the things you'd expect from a good hotel, like clean rooms, good beds and wi-fi, friendly and helpful staff, and a great location, Las Mariposas has more. It's a genuinely sustainable hotel, using solar power, grey water, and thoughtful practices. In addition, it's a lovely place to hang out, particularly in the morning over coffee, which is provided.

The staff at Los Mariposa made us feel very welcome in their lovely hotel. We speak little Spanish and they were patient and persistent in helping us understand. The cool, lush courtyard was a quiet retreat between adventures in the city and a nice spot to chat with staff and guests. I particularly appreciated the attention to sustainability (including signs in English so I could participate). This would be my first choice hotel should I return to Oaxaca City.

This eco-hotel is one of the nicest hotels we have ever been to: The rooms are superclean, quiet and you can have either rent the room only or the studios with kitchen use.

The hotel is extremely safe: The gate is always closed, and you have to ring to be let inside at all times. If that is not safe enough for you, for most rooms, the windows and doors can be locked from the inside. However, I personally liked our room (room No. 10) best, because it had a whole window front which was closed with a sliding door with a mosquito net, so you had the feeling of half sleeping outside in the wonderful courtyard.

The staff ware warm, cheerful and always friendly. During office hours (ca. 09.00-18.00) there is a lady at the reception who speaks excellent English even by international standards.

The place itself invites to linger: There several lovely courtyards with trees, water fountains and corners for reading and lingering (both in the sun and in the shade). There is a huge bookshelf with books for borrowing and a TV lounge in one of the shady niches. It is therefore not surprising, that (when we stayed there) most guests were either middle-aged cultural tourists or elderly American longer-term residents relaxing: There was always someone reading, chatting, learning Spanish, learning to do local handicrafts such as stitching or doing yoga, and in fact the other customers are part of the allure of the place.

Between 08.00 and 09.00/09.30, there is a complimentary breakfast, consisting of local coffee, tea, sweetbread and cornflakes (come early, because the bread is eaten fast). If you want something more wholesome, on most days, a Mexican lady comes at around 08.30/09.00 and sells delicious homemade Tamales. (There are also plenty of breakfast restaurants closeby).

The hotel also cooperates with several local eco- and fair trade organisations. Tours and travel advice offered. Twice a week, a artisan from one of the weaving villages comes and shows her work.

All in all, a great place to stay!

Room Tip: Room No. 10 (with the large sliding door)

We’ve come here in February and/or March for the past four years, and a couple of times in the fall, and will continue to return as long as we are able. Las Mariposas is a beautiful, immaculately clean, wonderfully maintained hotel with individualized rooms and studios surrounding lushly planted courtyards. The owners, management, and staff are all great people. If I manage to improve my Spanish, it will be because I want to be able to talk to them more easily. (Don’t worry, English is spoken in the office.) There is also a great feeling of community as guests linger over breakfast to talk and drink coffee and gather in the courtyards to talk and drink wine in the evenings. Christel, who runs the office, is very patient and helpful in lining up cabs and excursions and answering myriad questions.

This is an eco-friendly hotel, which really pleases us. They recycle, compost, use gray water to water plants and clean patios, and use solar heat—none of which is any hindrance to guests.

What more can we say—we love it here!
