This is one of my all-time favorite museum experiences. This former home of Danish archeologist/engineer Frans Blom and his wife photographer, journalist, and the Swiss German journalist and environmental activist Gertrude Duby Blom. Currently this site operates a hotel, museum, and research center run by the Asociacion Cultural Na Bolom, a non-profit organization devoted to the protection of Lacandon Maya and the preservation of the Chiapas rain forest. The home was formerly a dilapidated monastery when the Bloms rebuilt around the interior courtyard and renamed their home Na Bolom, the House of Jaguar. The personal library is still available for on-going research, continuing the goal of the Bloms, to have Na Bolom continue to serve as a cultural, social, and academic center. This couple and their love and affection for the Mayans and their forest environment is truly inspirational. This place is not to be missed.
