So we had an interesting stay in Cancun, a named storm and a hurricane, we learned a lot about the Greek alphabet and found a great restaurant.
We actually came here twice, the first time we were walking back from checking out a nearby hotel Gamma sent some more rain our way and we ran across the street and they were nice enough to seat us at the bar for some drinks, even though we were a bit under-dressed.
The cocktails were amazing! If you like spicy definitely try the Mala Fama and they also had an excellent selection of mezcal, some favorites, and plenty of new ones to try.
We liked it so much that, even though we were at an all-inclusive, after hurricane Delta we looked to see if we could have dinner here. We had seen staff in the parking lot being bussed back from the shelter and sure enough they were open! They had locked everything down and set it back up and we came for dinner around 8:30 and the hurricane hit the coast at 7AM that morning!
The only thing you would see that let you know that was a few items that weren't available on the extensive menu. Considering all the downed power lines and trees was pretty impressive. We did find things a bit warm at first since we walked our way over around some of the downed trees and such near our property, but luckily they were only over.
We had a little trouble since some of the drinks weren't available due to not being able to prep some ingredients needed. However, we found some others that were very nice as well and I tried several different mezcals with guidance from our server Jose C.
He was let me smell several others and even sample one and took the time to discuss the terrior, agave types, and production methods for each. Both Jose and Gaby were also very kind in helping balance out a drink my wife found a touch sweet (our fault for not reading all the ingredients) adding a bit more acid and even a bit more mezcal to keep it balanced overall yet customized to her taste.
You'll notice I mentioned two servers already and I will say there is still a third I'm forgetting that was on our service team. While being rather non-intimidating and stuffy this is definitely a finer dining establishment with some premium menu options and extremely well-executed presentations. So if you aren't used to it don't be surprised by the flurry of staff all dedicated to your table bringing fresh plates and flatware, refilling waters, and seeing to your needs while managing not to be intrusive.
The food was excellent, the salad we had could have been shared with four and I very much appreciated Jose letting us know beforehand it was sharable because I would have guessed it based on the reasonable price.
We also enjoyed the slight spice with the Peruvian ceviche and very much enjoyed the citrusy green sauce with the filet tacos, which I wasn't sure about when I tasted it but worked extremely well with the meat and jalapeno aioli.
Lest I forget the spicy octopus starter was also nice, firmer than some heavily marinated and tenderized versions but the better for it with the lightly fried finish and a very nice blend of heat and vinegar.
We're already scheduled to come back when we visit Cancun again over Thanksgiving week and are hoping to see Jose, Gaby and Rosa Negra's excellent mixology team again. Thanks for being the sunshine after the storms during our trip!
Oh and thank you so much for the anniversary dessert and sparkling! Don't skip the desserts here, they didn't have it that night but you need to see the "cloud" presentation. We saw one come out on the first trip and it's pretty impressive.
