I have been coming to Cancun every year for more than a decade. I have passed by Cenacolo many times; but, as it was within walking distance from our lodging, and based on current reviews, my wife and I decided to give it a try. The space is showing its age. Not that that is necessarily detrimental....some of the best food I've ever eaten was in a space of equal or greater age. However, when it affects the perception that would like to be presented; and it falls short, then it only appears lacking. An example is when you are trying to prepare 'dalla forma' pasta without the flambe', on a rickety, well-worn cart ...well, the presentation just falls short. That said, there is a reason for the ratings this restaurant gets. The food and the service. We found our dishes to be quite good in quality, taste, and preparation. The 'catch of the day' was grouper, pan seared with olives, artichoke hearts, and white wine reduction. It was excellent. But serving it in some rolled up foil on a plate, did not lend itself to a great presentation. Nor did the pasta sans the flambe' effort. Service was attentive, prompt, and polite. The restaurant was packed on a Thursday night. Reservations are a must. The handmade pasta station as you walk in was wonderful to watch, and the pasta was really good. A shame they don't sell the pasta as a takeaway.
