This has to be the worst Allegro resort I have stayed at!!! the sewer smell made it impossible to sleep at night.. although the grounds are well kept and the beach and diving are great.. The food is cold most of the time with not much of a varietyalmost everyone you talked to had a complaint about one thing or another.. spend a little more money and go to better resort or ask for a room in the 3000or5000 block the smell is not as bad dont cross the smart *** gal at the desk she is areal ***** go over her head staight to the manager gd luk P.S. i wish i would have listened to the previous reviews

It literally STINKS!!! While the place looks beautiful on the outside the grouds smell like a backed up septic system. When it rains it is that much worse. To make matters worse, the first room we were given smelled so badly of mold that I refused to stay in there because it was triggering my asthma. The desk staff were surly and uncaring. We were finally given another room without a mold problem but the rooms have other problems. The rooms are very, very small. There is only approximately 6 inches between the 2 full size beds which are hard as rocks. No screens on the windows so the mosquitos are always there to welcome you back to your room. The walls are so thin that our daughter inquired about the moaning and grunting sounds that were emanating from the next room (the sounds of sex were quite unmistakable). One afternoon, when my son and I were killing mosquitos, our neighbor came to complain about the noise in our room disturbing his afternnon nap. Yes the walls are that thin and the walls dont quite meet the roof. While this room didnt have the mold problem it did have a leaky toilet (I think we were lucky though, because other people were complaining of clogs and lack of water). There was also alot of rust and corrosion on the faucets and such. The smell of sulphur coming from the drains is also quite disgusting. Thankfully the odors were rarely discernable in the main building and the restaurants. The staff were friendly in all the restaurants and bars. The food in La Troje, the cafeteria where you are entitled to most of your meals, is very disappointing. Quantity does not make up for lack of quality. It was edible, but so lacking. We were happy to come back to the USA so we could have a decent Mexican meal. There is a Mexican style and Italian style restaurant on the grouds however you are only allowed to eat there 1 time each during your stay. The Mexican restaurant is not a good one and ironically enough the Italian restaurant had the best food on the grounds. There are no internet connections in the rooms or on the grounds despite being told that there were. There are two computers you can pay to use by the minute but after 40 minutes on the computer, there was still no real service to the US. The swim up bar is rarely open although the other bars were. The hot tub is a temp pool which is only a few degrees warmer than the pool and the ocean, and the jets are not therapeutic they only circulate the water. The activities and activities staff were the highlight of the hotels features. The pools are pretty and the beach is a nice sandy beach. Unfortunately that did not make up for all the other problems. We will not be making a return trip and would recommend that you avoid this place unless you have no sense of smell or taste.

First off,I want you to know that we are easy going country folk, and not picky. I have seen other people trashed because of where they are from and judged because of it. After booking our trip with Expedia, I stumbled on this web site. Wish I had checked it out before booking. The grounds are gorgeous as shown in the pictures and the compliments stop there. We were lucky at check in, as they actually had a room for us. The lobby was a constant battle ground as guests arrived daily that they did not have rooms for them or any sympathy for their situation. They had a "who cares" attitude. Seeing men yelling and women crying on a daily basis was quite unsettleing because they had traveled so far and no place to stay. There was even a wedding party that had booked 6 months in advance and they only had half of the 15 rooms that were reserved. One man from chicago had been there 2 hours standing at the desk while phone calls were being made at $30 per hour to find other accommodations for them. The room smelled horrible, luckily we brought room spray and incense, and there was mold growing on the walls. We could not leave the windows open as there were no screens on the windows, and the mosquetos were quite viscious. We were in an upstairs room and you could hear the people next door clear their throat. No privacy. You had to time your shower just right so as to not get burnt. Waiting to order a drink at the bar next to the acitivities pool I witnessed first hand how they wash the glasses. Two swishes in soapy water, then one in clear. Ordered a rum and diet coke and it had slime floating on the top. I had heeded the warnings to tip, tip, tip, and try to speak as much Spanish as I could, be nice and polite, but in the buffet dining room it did no good. There was to many wait staff, and most could care less if you ever got your drinks. Almost every morning I would ask for "dose caffe con leche por favore" and it would take two or three tries before anyone would arrive with it. And the smell from the septic treatment plant gagged you as you went from your room to the main dining area. As well as the time share salesmen harassing you every time you tried to go to eat. No butter, margerine only. and Fried, Fried, Fried food. If you have the slightest bit of trouble with your gall bladder, you are in big trouble. Everything seemed dirty, I even witnessed one the bus staff picking his nose while changing the linnen on one of the tables. Now I really know what Dorothy meant by "There's no place like home!"

Was there last week. Had 3 days of rain and 2 of clouds with a chill in the air. On departure day the weather was warm and beautiful. Jelly fish were bad. Almost everyone withour a full protective suit stayed on the beach the whole week. None of that is relavent since it has no bearing on evaluating the Alegro. The Alegro: First impression was "nice place", then we walked to the room. The sewage smell began at the rear of the main building and haunted us till we walked most of the way to our assigned building. It was nausiating and there constantly (morning, at lunch time, and even after dinner at 9pm), even when there was a 20 mph wing blowing. Rooms seemed clean, but the sewage smell seeped into the room quite often. Very evident at night. We departed morning of 20 Feb 04 and when we met our luggage at IAH Houston, there were 3 agents there warning us that we had an insect infestation "on" one of our bags. (A nest was found, inside the pull-handle assembly, luckilly not inside the case. Attributed to Mexico) The exterior of one bag was literally coated with insects running all over it. The agriculture folks were not pleased!!! and neither were we. The bag had been kept closed on a table in the room, except for transport.

I LOVED THE ALLEGRO but can see where some may not. I went with a group of 9, all family, ages 55,54,36,35,30,14,13,12, and 3 and we loved it. My husband, daughter (13), and I were the only divers in the bunch so we were a bit relunctant to suggest this resort, but were pleasantly surprised. This resort is cheerful, clean, and comfortable. If it were any nicer I don't think we would have felt comfortable letting the kids run wild. The dive shop offered great dive times and service, the drinks were good, and the staff was great about making the kids umpteen million virgin frozen drinks. All in all, if your looking for luxury stay at the Ritz in NYC- if your looking for a nice resort to lay around and get fat for a few days. THIS IS IT. Note: It is the southern most resort on the island so it will cost around $30 in cab fair round trip to do to town ... rent a car for a day, shop, and tour the windward side, have hoot all for about the same $30. HAVE FUN!!!
