A gorgeous beach on the windward side of the island with few people.

This is a perfect place to get away from it all. Strong breezes cool you down and there are great waves to play in. I was there solo and it felt perfectly safe to leave my belongings on the beach to go for a dip.

Beware though of strong rip currents in this area. Areas of calmer water between the breaking waves indicate rip zones. Survey the water carefully before entering. These calmer areas seem so inviting among the crashing breakers, but they can be deadly. Stay near the beach when the red flags are out and heed the warnings of the lifeguards. You'll have the urge to float and ride the waves, but this can get you pulled towards the rip areas.

There is nothing on the beach and little shade so bring your own umbrella. The strong breeze also makes this the perfect place for an air lounger.

The best way to get here is with a rental car. Prepare before you go as there is no gas outside of town and cell service is sketchy. There are lots of restaurants and bars along the way but little else. However, when I had a minor car problem, within a minute 6 cars had stopped to help me.

We’ve been coming to this gorgeous island for 28 years. San Martin is the most beautiful beach on the island but so deadly. We sadly witnessed the drowning of two people here who were caught in currents. It’s something that will stick in my brain for awhile and a stark reminder of the danger. Don’t ignore the red flags!

We visited as part of a personal tour we booked for 8 of us. Sand and water are great although the sea was a bit rough and I think its this way most of the time. Its a public beach and no crowds even on Friday. No real amenities so you have to bring your own chairs, towels etc. There is a grille, bar and gift shop across the street you can go too but i did not visit as we were there just a short time at the end of our day. Next time in Cozumel I plan on spending a few hours there. It is on the other side of the island and no electricity etc.
