This is some of the best food on the island! We had something recommended by the staff both times- can't wait to go back!

I just had yet another delicious meal tonight at Bastos. This is one of those rarest of gems in the restaurant world. The freshest of ingredients are combined with great skills to turn out dishes that are complex and comforting all at the same time. You feel cared for here, that it’s extremly important that you like their food. And boy, when you do- the smiles, claps on the back, the warm amigo reference feels as satisfying as your full stomach.
Enjoy this whole experience. We will. Again and again and again.
My husband and I took a cab to Bastos Grill and were seated right away. The place is small and crowded. We aren't big eaters so we decided to order the spicy chicken soup as an appetizer and to split the steak/shrimp dinner. We also ordered a margarita and a glass of wine before dinner. The soup came to the table and was wonderful with not too much spice. After finishing our soup we ordered two more glasses of wine to wait for our entree. After noticing several tables around us receiving their dinners and finishing their meals we realized that our order must have been lost. Several patrons that arrived after us had ordered, eaten, paid, and left. Finally, our waiter realized his mistake and placed our order to be expedited in the kitchen. Food was tasty and was very flavorful. The waiter apologized for his mistake and comped the two glasses of wine. I am sure this does not happen very often and the restaurant is very popular with the people that vacation long term on the island.
Amazing. Super friendly staff. Our waiter recommended the spicy chicken soup. Incredible. The arrachera is to die for. So tender!! Drinks are strong!!!
Highly disappointing--causes me to doubt the veracity of the many stellar reviews. Ordered the popular fish in white wine sauce and was told it was "like grouper" (a firm flavorful fish). Instead it was a mushy gelatinous fish in a way too salty sauce. Can you say tilapia?
The worst part was the nonexistent recovery: the waiter said "don't worry about it" and hustled away. No attempt was made to replace it with another menu item. There are far too many great places to eat on Isla Mujeres than to roll the dice at Bastos.
