We have stayed in many high-end resorts (both all-inclusive and not) and hotels in Cancun, Playa del Carmen and the Mexican Riviera and this resort absolutely takes the cake. In addition to being a bit more moderately priced than some of the other high-end resorts (Zoetry Paraiso de la Bonita and Maroma), the service is perfect and the food is by far the best I have had at any resort in Mexico. There are 5 different restaurants to choose from and they are ALL fantastic. The breakfast is a huge buffet with pretty much anything you could ever think of included. The resort is much smaller than it looks on the internet which is a big plus and the bar serves whatever type and brand of drink you can think of. They offer a personal concierge service for each room which is just steps away from your hotel room door and they are eager to help with scheduling dinner (on-site or off), activities, airport transfers/confirmations/changes (we were there during a tropical storm), or anything else you can think of. The spa was small, but nice and the services were great. They have a small workout facility which could be a bit larger for exercise afficionados, but we enjoyed jogging into town every morning through Playacar to be a nice workout. The resort is located in Playacar which is a short 1/2 mile walk to Playa del Carmen. We walked to town on the beach each afternoon. The people that we met at the resort were repeat customers and we will definitely visit again...hopefully next summer.

Me and my best friend got upgraded to this resort, after a 5 day stay at the Occidental Grand Xcaret. Since their hotel was fully booked, they sent us to the Royal Hideway, which we were VERY happy about. (Travelled end of july 2012)

When we came in, we were very impressed by the resort; very clean, upscale, and beautiful. The food there is simply amazing it's up to the standards of a high quality restaurant in North America. There's a large drink selection as well, if you're into sweet drinks, try the Watermelon Cooler, it's very good.

The beach AND pools are very nice there, white soft sand and crystal clear water ! The rooms are very big and the beds are comfy... Only downside, it was VERY humid when we went (end of july was pretty much the hottest time of the year), and our sheets was kind of wet, so we asked them to bring in a dehumidifier, which they did, and it made the situation a lot better.

This hotel was crowded with mainly older couples or families, but we still managed to have our fun ! I'd recommand to anyone !

My wife and I are very picky on food and hotels and this one exceeded all our expectations. The quality of food and service would be a little challenge to find in a restaurant at home. The staff people also made a difference. We are already missing some of them. The best hotel/resort in the region. We have already highly recommended it to friends and colleagues.

This was our 3rd adults-only all-inclusive down in the Cancun area (other two were Excellence Playa Mujeres and Secrets Maroma Beach). Compared to the other two, this was definitely the highest quality one in terms of the food, the landscaping, and the drinks. It was also the smallest, which meant it had less to offer in terms of entertainment and activities. There was no beach volleyball like at the other two, and pretty much no nightlife whatsoever. Best for couples (not singles). Good for relaxing. Beach chairs were never hard to find, and there was sufficient shade from palm trees on the beach if you didn't want full sun. Missed having the lazy river and beach volleyball that the Excellence Playa Mujeres had. Staff was super friendly, attentive, hard-working, made great drinks (pina coladas were not too sweet, and they made them with whatever brand alcohol you asked for, unlike Secrets which made them with the cheapest liquor unless you were watching them). Also the house wines were better quality than at the other places (those were barely drinkable).

The only bad part was the policy of having to make reservations at the restaurants. We were traveling with friends, so we requested a table for 4. The other two resorts didn't have the reservation policy and you just showed up and got a buzzer if there was a wait (which we were ok with). For some reason on several of the nights our reservations were messed up, and they had some weird policy where the hostesses/hosts at the restaurant couldn't help you, so that you ended up having to go to the front desk when you had a problem. We had to split up and go to separate restaurants one night after the reservation wasn't placed properly by the concierge. And on another night we had to wait until 9:30 to be able to eat together (got room service as a snack, which was tasty, but strange to have a pre-dinner). And the weird thing was that none of the restaurants were ever full. In fact on most nights, the restaurants were less than half full, some with only 3 or 4 tables full.

We brought dollars to tip, as we had for the other two all-inclusives. At this place we didn't see a single other person tip, which was very strange, because at the other places we saw about half the people tipping. We talked to some of the workers and, like at the other places, they didn't make a whole lot of money, and that they did appreciate tips and they were able to keep them (didn't have to pool them or anything). So we found that by tipping the people who brought us drinks on the beach, they would end up just bringing us refills of what we were drinking on a regular basis which was really convenient. I don't think you would have gotten bad service by not tipping, but we felt that the staff really worked their butts off and totally deserved it.

The rooms weren't huge, but enough room for us. Well kept up. The first floor rooms didn't have swim out options like at the other resorts. Not that we would have requested one, but just so that others know this isn't an option.

The gym wasn't super... probably just because the resort was small. Had several treadmills, only one elliptical. No traditional weight machines. Free weights though.

Some people have mentioned a loud side to the resort. We stayed on the north side of the property and didn't have an issue with noise from the neighboring resort. But you did hear the workers cutting grass and using other equipment starting at like 8am. Also heard people talking outside the door, and housekeeping in adjacent rooms as the place was all stone, so lots of echoing. This was similar to the other resorts though. Bed and pillows were ok. Not great, but not horrible.

Room Tip: North side of the resort seemed to be on the "quiet side" of the resort.

My Wife and I just returned from a wonderful stay at the Royal Hideaway. We have stayed at many resorts in this area and this ranks as the absolute best in my opinion if you just want to get away and relax.

Positives-
Manuel-- he greets you upon arrival and shows you to check-in. Then he takes you and your bags to your room, but on the way gives you a tour and explanation of the grounds. Once you enter the room he politely shows you what the room has to offer. Then for the rest of your stay he greets you by name and ask you if you need anything. He is the friendliest and most professional resort employee I have ever met.

The Beach- it is stunning!!!!! Beautiful white sand and clear blue water. No seaweed. Tons of chairs and umbrellas.

Pools-- beautiful pools and plenty of chairs. Service around the pool is excellent. They won't let you raise your own umbrella, carry your floats, and if you get up to ask for something the answer is always " please have a seat and I will get it for you"

Service- it was incredible in all areas except the Italian Restaurant. Javier by the pool work hard to make us happy our whole trip.

Food- food was excellent, however as others have stated portions are small. I ordered two entrees at each meal. The Grill on the beach was my favorite followed by La Ventanas. The Lunch menu by the pool was fantastic. I had burgers, quesadillas, wings, and nachos that we're all good.

Drinks- all the top shelf and all within Clear view. you name it and they have it. Drink selection is perfect!!!!

Negatives-

Room- not really a negative, but they are just average. Beds are very comfortable.

Reservations- I do not like having to make reservations on vacation.

All in all a great place to take your mind off of things. My wife and I enjoyed every minute of our trip. We walked 25 minutes into PDC for massages and shopping twice. We would love to return.
Night life- zero night life. After dinner drinks is it. No shows, no casino, and no disco.

Dear bigeherr
Thank you for choosing Royal Hideaway for your visit to the Riviera Maya and for taking the time to provide such a detailed review of your stay at our resort. We are thrilled that you enjoyed the facilities and the friendly, warm, attentive and personalized services we strive to provide I will pass your comment to Manuel and our pool concierge team.
Also our entertainment is low key, although we offer dancing lessons, yoga, water gymnastics, bingo and darts during the day and have live music including piano, saxophone, guitar, harp, dj or karaoke at night. Our hotel requires restaurant reservations in order to be able to provide personalized service and avoid waiting times for our guest. I apologize for the inconvenience and can assist youwithyou with making first night reservations in advance (cservices@mx.occidentalhotels.com).
We are looking forward to host you again during your next Mexico vacation!
