Just returned from our relaxing holiday at Ocean Maya. we flew out from Gatwick with Thomsons. No delays, good trip. hotel room just as picture. very large and very clean. the staff here work endlessly to keep everywhere tidy. the gardens are lovely, full of wild life. we were facinated by the racoons, coatis', iguanas and birds for the first couple of days and then accepted them as pets from then on in!!! we even shared our room for ten minutes with a huge blue crab, i spent those ten minutes jumping up and down on the bed while hubby removed it! food was good. we went in all the restaurants, no need to pre-book which was great. the beach has been washed away a bit, but as other reviews state, get off your butts and walk a bit, the lagoon to the right of the hotel (about 15 minutes walk) is beautiful. we used to take bread with us and the fish would come to us and take it from our hands. we booked three trips. xel ha was amazing, we snorkelled with an assortment of fish, the food there was lovely, the whole day was amzing. we went to cancun on the speedboat tirp, that was a great half day too. couldnt go on the third trip to Coca Bongo as i had the usual upset tummy, nothing to do with the food though, probably too much sun. weather on our first week was very stormy and overcast, but dont be fooled if you cannot see the sun, still wear your sun screen because the sun still will get through the clouds. Imelda, our lovely little barmaid was wonderful, she works so hard and always has a smile on her face. if management read this, please say hello to her from Lorraine and Richie. there were only two incidents that riled me, one was the trip to Xel Ha was a 7.15am pick up and the buffet restaurant opens at 7, but was running a bit late, so we went to the main bar and asked for a coffee, but he refused us one because we were not Premium customers, (come on, we paid enough to stay here, surely one cup of coffee wouldnt have hurt) and also, the same bartender refused me a glass of sparkling wine for the same reason, but the barmaids were happy to serve this to me, crazy, and yes, we were constant tippers!!! we chose to stay around the quite pool/beach side, the americans can get rather loud over the bar pool side, and i never see them using the toilet, strange that! Oh, and the alcohol is definateley watered down, it surprises me how drunk the americans get, i thought the british were known for being lager louts, but the british here are the quiet ones. Playa del carmen is great for shopping, we haggled to get as much as 75% off the asking prices, they really must think us brits are rich, but dont be afraid to haggle to the last, they are all really friendly and arent too pushy. was a bit upset to see in Playa Del Carmen two shops, one with a lion cub and one with a tiger cub. these poor creatures are being used for photo opportunities, and i thought it was illegal to have such animals as pets. that did upset me, but overall, we have had a wonderful holiday. if you would like to ask any questions, i would be more than willing to answer. i will not be going back to this hotel, not because I didnt love it, but the world is a massive place and I want to see plenty of it.

We stayed at the ocean maya for 2 weeks arriving on the 13th May we had room 902 a ground floor room looking directly onto the beach. The beach is lovely great sand but the ocean is not at all carribean dark and murky whilst paddling I walked into a large rock unseen from above and received a massive bruise. The pools are really good especially the fun pool where the activity team are really great in the mornings. The food in the buffet restaurant is excellent and the Italian great, we did not manage to eat in the Mexican as it was too dark to see the menu and our waiter could not grasp what we were saying so we left. The tepanyaki was not good we had booked for 8 oclock and kept waiting till 8.45 for our table which was double booked and 10 people were squashed in 2 people on lower chairs. Our room, was plagued with biting insects despite a visit from the fumigation man, and flooded by the faulty fridge which was eventually fixed. The grounds are beautifully kept a delight to walk through, though after 4 days of rain picking a pathway that did not have huge puddles was a problem. A point to remember during the heavy rain there is nothing to do. The pool bar was good though sometimes under staffed, the main bar was pretty good and the staff in the buffet restaurant would always fetch any drinks we wanted. This is the first time we have stayed in a hotel out of cancun itself and not having anywhere to walk to was a real downside for us. Overall we had a good time all the staff were friendly polite and helpful, but we will not return to this hotel due to the remoteness and the murky ocean, back to Play del Carmen or Cancun.

We had a very positive experience at the Ocean Maya Royale. Adults only mean there are no noisy children or families and the hotel as a whole has a very relaxed and peaceful feel. It is spotlessly clean everywhere and service throughout is very good. Wifi is available in the reception area but was slow and intermittent.

Rooms are large, spacious and comfortable. We were in a villa with large patio and beautiful garden views. We saw coatis and racoons and colourful birds from our room which was very quiet apart from the sound of birdsong.

The food is excellent, all fresh with an abundance of choice at every meal. There are different restaurants to choose from and no suplement is added to dine at these. Make sure you go to a 'show cooking' meal in the Japanese restaurant - an interesting and fun experience, delicious food and the chance to meet people (as you are seated at tables of ten). Don't miss the fresh juice bar near the quiet pool - smoothies and jiuces made to order with lovely tropical fruits.

There are three beautiful swimming pools with activities and a party atmosphere at one (with the swim up bar) and total relaxation at the others. The hote has this balance just right - plenty going on if you want it and peaceful areas to be if you don't. We mixed it up a bit and it was good to have this choice. Staff serve the pool areas so will take your orders for drinks and cocktails and bring them to your sunbed!

The spa is top quality and usually has good avialability for treatments. Each day they promote special offers so no need to book everything in advance or pay full price. We can recommend the massage and body treatments. Massage is also available on the beach.

The beach is small and isn't a long stretch of Caribbean sand such as in Playa del Carmen. It is clean and the sea is good to swim in but not to snorkel in. The hotel's Diving Club offers boat trips out to a nearby reef for snorkelling (as well as diving trips, catamaran trips and kayaks to use). Each day a lot of seawood is washed up onto the beach and the staff work tirelessly to clear this. I swam despite the seaweed which was clean anyway; there was just one day out of twelve when it was particularly bad and I was covered in bits when I came out of the sea.

The hotel isn't near anything so going out takes planning and you need to travel. The hotel's courtesy bus will take you into Playa del carmen and from there you can take the ferry to Cozumel or buses to various destinations. If you use the bus ask for first class - these are modern, air-conditioned and take direct routes. Bus travel is very cheap as, are taxis.

There is much to do on the Riviera Maya and many organised trips. We did a mix of organised and independent and probably preferred the independent ones as it was cheaper and time wasn't spent picking up and dropping off at other hotels. I would recommend Tulum which has a beautiful beach and sea for swimming (and amazing ruins!), Akumal - again beautiful and superb for snorkelling (we saw turtles, rays and barracuda) and the cenotes. A trip into the jungle is hot and tiring but interesting - combine it with a refreshing swim in a cool cenote for a truly unique experience.

We would recommend this hotel bearing in mind the quiet location and small beach. All in all a lovely holiday!

We were very late on arrival due to Thompson's poor flight lost a day plus of our holiday and given a £20.00 food voucher and a letter to claim our losses off our insurance company we did eventually leave Gatwick 9and a half hours late, having spent 12 hour around Gatwick North then to do a ten and a half hour flight was very trying especially when the flight replacement has no pillows or blankets (very few for babies and pensioners only). The replacement crew were called in off their day off so full respect to them just so shoddy from Thompson.
The food on the flight was very poor we arrived at approx 2am 11 hours late but already half way through our first nights sleep supposedly.
We were given reps packs and expected to meet our rep at 9am the next morning well after unpacking we got a couple of hours nap before meeting our rep not suprising there was nobody there but us.On oooour return flight we were charged over weight because we purchased blankets for the return flight 4 kilos 68.00. The hotel was great, poor beach , fantastic staff, lovely well kept grounds, Thompsom you were such a let down.

Room Tip: We had room in 12 block sea facing very good little noisy through the day but very quiet at night! Nice !
