Quinta avenida is full of restaurant and retail stores and also a long the way you can see people performing and people enjoying music.

Other than the pushy sales people that tries to get you to sit in a timeshare meeting or buy tickets for excursions, it was a very cool place to go to shop, eat and explore. Many spoke English so it's not hard to ask for directions or get recommendations.

This is a nice shopping district with the street closed to pedestrians only. You have tons of the usual tourist items and the shopkeeper trying to lure you into their place, which I understand because there is a lot of competition. I just ignore them and keep walking. One of the scam is the shopkeepers will say "don't you remember me, I work at your resort of I was your waiter" all to get you to feeling comfortable going into their shop for some high pressure sales. Just ignore them and keep walking!

If you enjoy people watching, shopping, and eating you should definitely check out Quinta Avenida, but don't spend all of your time here, there's so much more to Playa del Carmen than Quinta Avenida!

Like walking in the touristy area of any city - lots of repetitive souvenir shops with really cheaply made trinkets. Pushy vendors (some even offering pot, cocaine, or heroin), lots of bars with flash lights, and people trying to get you to book their tour.

It wasn't anything special. It's okay to walk the first time, but after that, it's more of a place to avoid unless you know specifically where you want to go. I'd hate to see the place during spring break.
