My friend and I went to Hartwood for dinner during our stay in tulum. I wasn’t sure I would like it based on reviews but my friend insisted we went. We were not disappointed. The food and drinks are amazing and the staff was great. They had a lot of different choices for appetizers, entree and sides. The staff explained those very well. The drinks were also so tasty! Price was about 1000 pesos a person for quite a bit of food. We both had an appetizer, a main meal and dessert and a drink. It is more expensive than many restaurants in the area- but totally comparable to restaurants in big cities with similar food with great attention to detail. It would be a great place for a couple to have a romantic dinner. Would recommend to try, I was sceptical but they proved me wrong!

We were happy to have reservations (8PM), but went there early for drinks (quite special!). A lot of people, but they were very efficient from providing reservation at the entrance, to get drinks, to get to the table; absolutely stress-free, despite the crowd.

Menu changes which is a nice change to the various restaurants that all have a kind of the same (tuna, salmon, ribs and lamb chops). Food very good and fresh: Ceviche and ensalada jicama, then costillas agave, very juicy and tender.

Atmosphere very nice with candles only and open-wood-fire in the kitchen.

Service: very friendly and (very) efficient. But maybe we were rather clients and not guests, since also a host (chef) is missing. And yes: Being European, to get the check without asking, is a little rough ending, but they seem to want turning tables at least 3x per evening. Which again brings me to the point that we were clients, not guests.

Conclusion: Hartwood was a very great experience, we had a great night, but it’s not the only great one you can get in Tulum.

We booked well in advance - this is a must as it us a very busy restaurant and must turn it’s tables 2\3 times an evening.

We never felt rushed although there us a queue of diners waiting for tables that occasionally encroach on the bar / eating area.

We arrived early, meet and greet was polite, we didn’t ask about wait times and it wasn’t offered either - we waited about 20 mins past our allotted time - we grabbed a cocktail and a beer in this time so the bar service worked well. We didn’t get shown the cocktail specials which are on a board, but the a la carte cocktails offered loads of choice and we both went fir a tequila based one which was exquisit.

There was no expectation / queue management so I had to enquire when we were being seated - but the maitre dit was as good as her word and seated us in the order she had indicated.

When we got to our table the service went up several notches. Our waiter talked us through the menu on the board, left us to decide and was available fir any questions / recommendations.

Food service was raid and quality was top class. We shared starters and mains, ceviche and mackerel to start, both aromatic with delicate flavours and textures, with ribs and robola to follow, the ribs in particular were outstanding, beautifully marinating, very fleshy and just fell off the bone.

It wasn’t a cheap evening at c.3,000 pesos and the recommended service charge was 15% which in the end, for the all-round experience including the theatre of the setting, we felt was justified (even though it’s steep for a Brit!).

This was one of the best dining experiences of my life. The staff, ambience, location and oh that amazing food were spot on! I had the lobster salad, ceviche, sweet potato and all were to die for. It is definitely worth the cost. Plan early and reserve well in advance. It’s a meal I will not soon forget.

We had the octopus and the spare ribs. Both were fine. The service was attentitive. The drinks potent. And the dessert was life altering.

We had th baked plantain. Which while lovely was completely shadowed by the fudge brownie. The name is misleading and doesn't do justice.

It's four triangles of dense rich Mayan cacao cake. It's soft and moist but not gooey. It's topped with a cloud of passion fruit infused cream and a hidden nugget of coconut butter.
