We came here a few times for dinner and tapas and were very happy with the quality overall. This romantic setting, especially at night, with all the candles nestled in the nearby rocks make it very romantic along with the waves crashing just steps away. This is one of the more higher priced spots in Zipolite, but the cuisine is more refined and you cannot beat the setting. We enjoyed a lovely rucola salad with juicy papaya and goat cheese, however ordering again on a second visit it was presented a bit more chintzy...still delicious, only wished it was as the first time. The ceviches as well as the octopus were delectable and delicate. The fish tacos were tasty, although the small pieces of fish were perhaps a bit overwhelmed by too much batter. The service is comfortable, attentive and friendly, while still being laid back, allowing a nice balance. Would definitely return to this unique property.

On our third night in Zipolite we decided to finally go to the restaurant everyone had been recommending to us: El Alquimista.
We got there and the first impression was brilliant: beautiful scenery and romantic atmosphere.
That was the only good thing. We ordered some grilled meat which took ages to come out. The moment the meat arrived at our table three big black dogs surrounded our table and stayed there for the rest of the evening. The meat: well I was truly tempted to give it to the dogs; I didn't do it out of etiquette. The chicken breast was raw, the chorizo was super soft and kind of sweet and the rest of the meat was simply unremarkable. The salad looked several days old and the potatoes were marinated in a sauce that was not nice. Nobody came to try to do anything about the harassing dogs or asked us if everything was ok. We ate qickly and left the place a bit shocked, trying to understand how this place has so many good reviews.

We ate here several times during our week in Zipolite. Granted, we were staying at the hotel but it's worth it even if you're not. Breakfast was good, lunch was good, drinks were reasonable (not the cheapest in town, mind you, but reasonable), but dinner is where this place shines. They place tables on the beach, and with El Alquimista being somewhat isolated, it makes things very impressive. They even put candles out on the rocks, making for an amazingly beautiful setting. The food is quite good, particularly the fish and seafood. Although the prices aren't the cheapest, you do get what you pay for. The signature drinks are very well thought-out, and their selection of mezcal is pretty solid. The staff during all shifts is quite capable, but a word of warning: during the heat of the day, the further you are from the bar, the longer you'll wait. No criticism, because that sand is HOT, just a statement. That being said, the service at night is much better than during the day. Overall, this is worth at least one dinner stop.

Oh, and if you like dogs, you'll be happy to know that a few will like join you for dinner. Don't worry, they're pretty well-behaved.

We had heard a lot about this place and were pleasantly surprised during our first visit some time ago. We went back in February and we were not impressed at all. It was below average!
