Aeroinon is a delightful little treasure hidden away at the far end of Piskokephalo’s village square approximately five minutes drive south of Sitia. An old, stone built kaphenion, or cafe, it was recently refurbished in the traditional Cretan vernacular style and converted into a lovely little restaurant serving a wide variety of carefully scourced traditional Greek mezes. Vicky, the cook, greeted us with her brilliant ancient Egyptian-like eyes and a huge smile, which did not falter when I explained to her that I was on an auto-immune diet and asked if she could serve anything without gluten, dairy, sugar or meat. She explained that she delighted in food adventures and set about preparing a feast of saligary boubouristous (snails), grilled mushrooms and vegetables, an exquisite melitsanosalata (eggplant salad), fresh cucumber and tomatoes and a plate of olives. The food, the peaceful setting and the perfect service provided by Vicky’s ever cheerful partner Manolis brought us back a second time, and I shall return again next time I am in Sitia. Very highly recommended, and, if you require special attention, like me, you might consider calling ahead (6983581695 and 6980983418).
