Hey there.. Well for starters this is not a 5 star hotel, or GM. This is an awesome 4 stars hotel. Clean rooms, big pool, drinks all over the place and near to the beach. Activities all day, volleyball, ping pong etc. Nice place to rest and have fun.

We stayed at the sea Garden over spring break this year. Sorry has taken me so long to write a review! Hotel was very clean with an exceptionally friendly staff. We got suckered into doing the timeshare presentation, ugh, but on the upside we received a very nice Ocean View room and privileges at the Grand Mayan. We really loved our stay at the Sea Garden, the bartenders are very accommodating and the activities staff is wonderful :-) we would definitely stay again! One tip, leave the hotel and have dinner at the many restaurants that are located right around the marina. Especially the El Barracuda & Eddie's.

There are a few things to say upfront. First, this was a free week from another timeshare resort company (which was $615 to upgrade and accommodate 6 people). Second, while booking we had been looking and planning to go to the Grand Mayan and we got to the final screen and it said sold out. The Sea Garden being part of the same Vidanta resort seemed like a good second choice. Third, I would not likely stay here again but it did have some pluses. Finally, we did purchase a membership with Vidanta.

My disappointment began as the taxi arrived. I wasn't even certain I was at the correct resort having viewed the Vidanta site a number of times to pull up to the small white building that did not resemble the resort we had looked at. Arriving at our room was not better, it was very dated, not the most spacious for 6 people and had the smell of damp seaside motel. Renovations are needed.

To top off our first impression a small storm came through and we were without power for almost 5 hours. Not totally the hotels fault but, we were the only resort without power. During this time I appreciated the sliding door to the room that had no balcony but it was usually just source of panic as my kids thought they could go on the 6 inch ledge.

I had to call for additional towels everyday. Four were being brought for a room registered with six people.

Our room had 2 double beds and 2 daybeds with trundles in the living area but you had to rearrange to use both. It was tight for 6. Maybe not 4 adults and 2 kids.

We were also informed that we could go to the Vidant Resort (which this is part of) but you had to take a taxi or walk along the beach. I would think they want us to spend money there they would provide shuttles but no.

We had use of only the pool at the Sea Garden but could take the kids to the childrens activities at the Grand Mayan, but we aren't supposed to use the pools there. The Vidanta Resort was expansive with lazy rivers, wave pools, and a water slide. We were able to get passes with our timeshare presentation. The "selling point" for the Sea Garden is it is directly on the beach, the rest of the Vidanta resort has a long walk out to the beach even though it is located on it as well. The red flags were up throughout our visit do to stingrays and jellyfish.

Now to the positives.

The Joy Club. We did experience the Joy Club at the Grand Mayan and those working at the Sea Garden especially Juan and Ivan did a fantastic job. From recalling names to getting people involved there was plenty to be done at the poolside all day.

Although I did not find the particularly friendly, the staff at the pool bar was prompt. Our waiter the same, easy to find but not necessarily friendly. The food at the pool bar was just OK, same with room service. We were better off walking to the marina and eating at a local place.

If you plan to cook something in your room, breakfasts and lunches and stay at the pool all day it could be fine.

Room Tip: Just a hotel not a resort!

We've exchanged our timeshare and stayed at Vindana properties in Playa del Carmen and we expected the same quality level at the Sea Garden but were very disappointed. The only positive was the location, right on the beach.

The hotel is older and in great need of an upgrade. My biggest complaint is the air conditioner noise in the room. It was July so running the air was necessary but the noise was deafening. I had to sleep with ear plugs and a pillow over my head. Hated it. There are no screens in the windows or slider so fresh air is not an option in the evenings. There are no outside balconies off the rooms. The bed was rock hard and the sheets were not made for the size bed. The water pressure in the shower was lacking. The grocery store on this property had very little selection and the coffee machine was broke.
The power unit for the hotel next door runs all day and all night and is very loud. It's located near the street and the rear facing rooms are right next to it.

Getting drinks by the pool was very slow if they even came by at all. The pool bartenders were lacking any personality, very slow to get their attention and just not what I would expect at a resort.

You can shop and dine at the MUCH larger Vindana property just down the beach but you're not allowed in the pool. We felt like second class citizen. Of course we were offered to have a 1 day pass to use their pool if we did the timeshare tour just so we could know what it feels like to be worthy of the nicer hotel and all its amenities.
If you're exchanging a timeshare go for the Grand Mayan, Bliss or Lux - don't stay here!

Room Tip: I would not stay here again.
