We included the Cave & Basin National Historic Site as part of an all-day bicycle tour that started/ended on Tunnel Mountain Drive and also included the Banff Visitor Centre, CPR Station, Fenland Trail, Vermillion Drive/Lakes, a short stretch of the Rocky Mountain Legacy Trail from Vermillion Drive to the Bow Valley Parkway (1A), Bow River Trail, Marsh Trail, and Sundance Trail. It was a fantastic bicycle tour and Vermillion Lakes was a nice part of it.

While the entry fee is only low (under $4 from memory), there wasn't a lot to keep you occupied. There was some detail of the history of national parks and the original sulphur hot springs were able to be viewed. It's a little way out of town (I walked).

During a stay in Banff from Scotland to ski we decided to visit the Cave and Basin. Despite previous visits to the area we had not visited this natural spectacle previously and were certainly not disappointed. The staff were very friendly and informative. The displays were very well set out. The history of the site since it was “discovered” was interesting. On reflection it did paint a picture of a natural wonder which had been used considerately by the native Inuits and then greedily exploited by incoming settlers. Visitors incredibly also readily ignored signs asking them not to dip their hands In the water so as not to unbalance the fragile ecosystem of the basin snails!
Despite the snow we also enjoyed a walk around the marsh loop which was well signposted.
This historic site where the Canadian national park system was born is well worth visiting and represented very good value for money.

This place is mostly for educational purposes. There is a cave where you can see, but mostly it is the birthplace of Canada national parks.

Went to this site on my own. It is extremely beautiful and full of history. It is amazing the resilience of the people in the 1800's. Walked the outside upper decks which offer panoramic and stunning views of the surrounding mountains. It was a winter wonderland and very beautiful. Well worth your time and to gain knowledge of how Banff began. Enjoyed immensely!
