Living in Alberta we sometimes miss what's right in front of us. This is a historical site relating the story of how the Banff Hot Springs were discovered and later turned into a national park. It was cool to see the Cave inside, but most of the fun for me was outside. There's a boardwalk that climbs up at the spring, where you get to see (and smell) the natural state of things. and of course the views from there are beautiful.

This site is worth a visit if you have an hour to kill while you are in Banff. It only costs a few dollars to get in and for that you get to see the underground pool of sulphur water (yeah it stinks), plus there are some interesting displays about the history of Banff. There is also a boardwalk outside with some nice views. Nice enough place, but don't plan on spending too long here.

Cave and Basin National Historic Site is the proper title, and that is what it is. If you are interested in the place that started the National Parks system in Canada this is it. Even my 8 year old found it facinating. If you only want to soak in hot water, then go to Banff Upper Hot springs as you can't do it here. The other item of interest here is that these hot springs are the only place in the world where you can see the Banff Springs Snail. Tiny little things, but it is really neat to be able to see, in its natural habitat, something so critically endangered.

This place is good if ya wanna read the history about Banff and really how it got started. I guess it's kinda a must see thing. It took me a total of about 4 minutes to travel through here and thats with stopping for a bathroom break. We went in late march so the pool wasn't open and stuff, basically I found it a waist of my time and money.

The birth of the National Park system in Canada originated right here! Yes,its true. Men who were building the railroad stumbled upon this, climbed through a hole and found a cave with a hot mineral pool. You can still see this today,as well as the pool, now closed, which people flocked to in earlier days. The discovery of this site led to the creation of the National Parks,as Banff was the first park in Canada. The story behind this place is alone, worth the visit!
I loved the walk up to the indoor cave, its awesome!
We may lose this piece of history. At the time of this writing,Parks Canada is looking at either renovating or closing it. So if you do want to see it, try to get there as soon as possible.
