Well it's not spectacular as waterfalls go in the height department .. but in the height of summer when the mountain snow is melting a very large volume of water is roaring through.

Visit in winter ( early Jan 18 ) and it's a frozen mass with liquid water flowing out from underneath .. with large areas of the river also thickly frozen so that people walk out on it.

Thank Sarah H

Getting to Bow Falls involves a short ~15 minute walk from Banff along well maintained paths. The first part is mostly flat but there is a section with some steps up and over a small ridge just before the falls themselves that might be a bit tricky in wet/icy weather. You can also cycle there without too much trouble (barring a short but steepish hill on the way back).

There are nice views of the falls from above and from downstream - the river bends almost 90 degrees just afterwards so you can stand on the bank and look directly up at them along that short stretch of river.

The rest of the landscape at the main viewing point is also well worth seeing, the river flows on down a very scenic valley just after the falls and you can get a good look at that too.

Our last destination on this tour was to Bow Falls, a major waterfall albeit wide and short, on the Bow River, within walking distance of the Banff Springs Hotel. We could just make out the grandeur of the distant mountains over the long view of the river from the base of the falls. With walking trails picnic areas this is a nice spot to spend an hour or two, although, sadly, our guide did not allow time for us to explore the trails.

Really pretty walk to Bow Falls. Regardless of the cool temp, it was wonderful walking to see it. It's absolutely lovely.
