We decided to visit here as a day trip from Jasper. Nice scenic drive in and plenty of free parking when you get to Maligne Lake with toilets, wheelchair accessible. Once we got there it clouded over and started to drizzle a bit. There was a restaurant nearby but we didn't go there, instead we walked around the edge of the lake on one of the trails.
The lake was frozen for the most part, still it was a picturesque setting and we managed to fill in an hour by building rock stacks and driving around to the other side across the bridge for a look.

The only access to the lake is at one end unless you take a boat. It was a pretty lake but the trail was blocked off so we couldn't walk around the lake. There is a restaurant there.

Lake Maligne is a great day trip if you are staying in or near Jasper, not least because it seems to be beyond the range of most of the coach excursions, so it is not as over-run by tourists as some of the places nearer Lake Louise and Banff. Even so, it's probably worth setting out quite early. We booked on the boat trip to Spirit Island, which was spectacular and enjoyable, and enhanced by a sensible and informative commentary from Francois, who did not find it necessary to talk non-stop throughout, or to make a joke out of everything, like his colleague who had driven us out to the Athabasca Glacier the day before. Seb drove the boat, and was properly respectful both of the natural environment and of other boat users on the lake. No wild life around unfortunately, but blue waters and snow-capped mountains made for a great experience.

The excitement to visit the lake was dampened not by the stunning views of the lake but being told the rows boats were not in use. For a family of three that didn't bode well as the choice of a kayak for two and one person going alone was not appealing. Being prime season, one would have have thought they would ensure usable row boats were available. Furthermore, the one hiking trail that we embarked on, was closed after a short distance. There was no notices regarding this. We took an alternate trail which was enjoyable.
The lake itself and the views are stunning

We took the boat tour to Spirit Island, and saw some magnificent sites. We had the pleasure of being informed by our tour guides Kat and Mallory. We took many great scenic pictures. Well worth it.
