The staff was friendly, the grounds were beautiful, exactly what you would want for a Maine weekend trip. The included breakfast each morning is absolutely fantastic, you won't leave hungry. Perfect short drive to get to downtown Boothbay.

The only weaknesses: The basketball court/tennis court need a little TLC and we stayed in the Pine View building and I swear, the walls are paper thin. We could hear EVERYTHING going on around us which was very awkward. That is my only real complaint but if you can avoid that building, which is also the cheapest rooms they offer, then you should be fine.

Room Tip: Avoid the Pine View building unless you want to listen to your neighbors 24/7

this is a great place to stay, clean, quiet & reasonable. Lots to do for kids, kayaking, swimming, basketball, rec room, pool, etc. Breakfast is included with several choices.Only a short drive to Booth Bay Harbor, with restaurants galore, and every kind of shop you can think of.. .Robinson's (go early) is excellent for twin lobsters.
Would return again

Room Tip: second floor facing water with excellent views of boats and harbor

We stayed at Ocean Gate for eight days and really enjoyed ourselves. I've waited a few weeks before writing this review, but the things that still stand out were; the friendly and helpful staff (especially interesting to talk with the students who are from all over the world and working there for the summer - the leaders of tomorrow, no doubt!), the pool was fantastic, the free breakfasts were plentiful and yummy, the rooms were well-kept, the ping-pong table semi-outside was a plus, as was the mini-golf. We didn't borrow any boats. Fun places we found interesting nearby; Big Al's on the highway was really something to see (unusual bargain stuff from all over), Monkey-see/Monkey-doo on the highway was a good deal and fun for kids at the end of the day (the prices drop then), the trip to Monhegan Island was memorable.

Some areas for possible (slight) improvement at Ocean's Gate; The lobster supper that was offered once a week was cancelled the day it was to happen (lack of interest). We probably would have booked the alternative one earlier in the week that is offered privately as an island outing, but by then it was too late (we were leaving the next day?). A bit disappointing, but not the end of the world. Maybe I'm over-reaching here, but we were surprised there wasn't more of a sandy beach somewhere nearby - maybe all the nearby businesses should get together and truck in some sand and put it where there is a small "stoney" beach not too far from the resort? Just an idea. BTW: Has anyone ever thought of putting a small slide down the bare rock and into the pool? Our daughter thought that would be really cool. Oh ya... and one thing we all found funny... the "freshwater lake" on the resort grounds is ... well ... tee hee ... actually a swamp! But we can't fault them for trying! :-) Keep up the good work, Ocean's Gate!

We stayed 4 nights at Ocean Gate, and when we first checked in to our room I have to admit I was disappointed. The furnishings were worn and frumpy, and the room smelled like wet dog. We later found out that the room we had was one that allowed pets. Our daughter (who is allergic to dogs) spent the first night congested and wheezing. The next morning I mentioned it to the staff and they were very apologetic. They cleaned the carpets and changed the bed spreads, which helped greatly with the dog smell and her allergic reaction. But the next day I learned that the allure of Ocean Gate is not the rooms, but the gorgeous location. We went for walks on shady tree-lined hiking trails, fly fished in the on-site pond (and caught several bass), kayaked over serene blue ocean, lounged by the pool, and ate lobster rolls and chowder in the nearby (adorable!) towns of Boothbay Harbor and Wiscaset. The place grew on us more and more every day and we fell in love with the beautiful location and friendly staff. If you do decide to go here, do not go in expecting a 4-star resort - Ocean Gate is not that. It is more of a funky summer camp with a lot of heart and charm. Would I go back? Yes - in an instant! But next time I will request a room in the newer remodeled wood building on the hill - those looked like the best on the property.

Room Tip: If you do not have a dog, make sure to request a room that does not allow pets.

My wife Janice and two of her friends stayed at Ocean Gate. The room was cozy and the view wonderful. Breakfast was yummy and free kayaking fun. A great summer get away far enough out of the Booth Bay bustle, but near enough for a rainy day! Friendly folks and well kept grounds were enjoyed by all.
