We had two nights here for AUD$240/night, which makes it expensive for us. Great location in Vancouver in the lovely 'West End' residential area which I think is probably the pick of all the places to stay in Vancouver. (Next time we might try somewhere a bit more affordable in the area.) Barclay is a gorgeous house with some very nice touches, including the very classy breakfast, but we found our room (Mountain) really, really tiny - would be better with a double rather than queen bed in it - and the private hallway down which you walk to the bathroom is potentially public, as it doesn't have a lockable door on it. I did like the bathroom with door opening onto the old fire escape! Quirky and nicely appointed, but not worth the price, I feel - might get better value lashing out for the Peak. Be warned, the wireless seems a bit temperamental so don't expect to rely on it. Do visit Raincity Grill at English Bay, about 15 minutes pleasant walk from Barclay House; an institution which remains unspoilt, genuine, really good, and with one of the few restaurant views in this part of town. We had a lovely couple of hours over drinks on the veranda at the Hotel Sylvia as well, a Vancouver instituion.

In August, my boyfriend and I spent six nights at the Barclay House, which runs like clockwork thanks to Dennis and Art, who are both an absolute delight. We thoroughly enjoyed their friendly hospitality and scrumptious breakfasts.

We stayed in the Beach room. The little sitting area is lovely for tea or a glass of wine after a day of sightseeing. Considering the price, however, air conditioning should be a feature of this B&B. Please consider adding it.

Over all, highly recommended!

We stayed three nights in this B&B and we would highly recommend it.
It's in quiet neighborhood, very close to Robson street and a short walk to Stanley Park.
It's absolutely stylish, breakfast is excellent and the service is impeccable.
our room (the Mountain room) was quite little and warm (no air conditioning) but it was nice anyway.
And they welcome you with a bottle of champagne in the fridge!

Our arrival time was early enough that the staff, Dennis, the concierge, and Arty, the chef, were both at the House to greet us. We were welcomed like family and settled into our room quickly and efficiently.. We stayed in the Haidaway Room which is located on the lower floor and has it's own private entrance and Jacuzzi and large screen TV. The room is spacious and well appointed. Daily service was provided after we had gone off on the journey of the day suggested by Dennis as a postlude to breakfast; with his guidance we did not repeat any of our forays from the previous year..

This was our second trip to Vancouver and The Barclay House. As a gay couple we were married at the House last year with immeasurable help from the staff; we returned to celebrate our anniversary and celebrate Gay Pride. Though all our fellow guests were heterosexual, we were welcomed and included as part of the House family. I encourage other gay folks to consider this an especially gay friendly venue. Davie Street, the gay area of Vancouver, is a brief 5 block walk from the House.

Breakfast deserves a special comment. Be prepared to ask for a smaller portion if you are not a big eater. My doctor advises me to eat breakfast "like a king". He must have had Barclay House and Arty in mind. If there was a leftover muffin or sweet there was always a
plastic bag to take it for later in the day. Be prepared to put on a pound or two unless you are highly disciplined. Arty prepared everything fresh and hot off the stove.

We cannot say enough good things about Dennis and Arty. They were superb hosts. Dennis managed the serving during breakfast and was always prompt with another cup of coffee or glass of orange juice. By the time breakfast was over, he had learned enough about our what we had done to be able to recommend something new and provide us with a map and instructions. When Arty had time away from the stove, he gave us morning welcome.

If there is anything negative to say, it is that the rooms are a little pricey. Hopefully the owners will read this and consider a small drop in rates. However, we want to make it clear that despite the rate, we will return and have already asked Dennis to hold the room for us.

We stayed in The Garden Room at the Barclay House for 5 days and loved it really much. The room is very comfortable, clean and had complimentary cookies every day! But even better than the rooms is the delicious breakfast which is served in the living room every morning. Also Dennis' great advice where to go, where to eat and what to do were very helpful! There was no question he couldn't answer. We liked the Barclay House that much, that we decided to stay there for 2 others nights in The Hideaway with the jacuzzi at the end of our trip.
