Much of the Downtown (where most want to visit) core of Vancouver has the same issues. You shouldn't leave the kids to play by themselves, no matter what someone tells you.
If you are outside the DT core, your children should be safe at the many great parks "around" the city. In particular stay out of the DTES (Downtown eastside) as this area is infested with drugs and disease.
A very relaxing place by the middle of downtown/Yaletown. You can sit and unwind here for couple of minutes, watch kids playing happily, and then go back to work.
Emery Barnes is one of those few people who had no enemies, only friends. Great to see him remembered in this little patch of green nestled between Yaletown and downtown. Lots for children to do, so great place to pause if you have your family with you.

My 5 year old loved this park. A lot of interesting climb on toys. I felt he needed help and supervision, but it was good for him to get his energy out. Lots of benches to sit on and lots of people watching. A few lovely fountains and a dog park off to the side. A nice gathering place in the city.
Came through on our walk around Yale Town. We say many kids on the play equipment surrounded by parents. There were teenagers playing frisbee and others just enjoying the weather.
There were homeless people sleeping that kept to their own area but were a reminder that we could walk thru to a warm place to sleep tonight. They're not so lucky.
