“Great Beer, Spooky Ambience, Cool Place”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 February 2012

Met an old friend at the Bent Mast to catch up. Excellent selection of local beers and decently priced. The wine selection would be classifed as minimalist. A couple reds and a couple whites and thats it. The food was average. Nothing special, nothing grand perhaps a little quirky. A buffalo chicken burger turned out to be buffalo chicken strips on a bun. The Bent Mast is located in a very cool turn of the last century house in the James Bay neighbourhood of Victoria BC. The ambience is a bit spooky but very warm. Overall, a pretty neat little neighbourhood pub. Go for the beer, but not necessarily for dinner.

“Awful. I will be returning as soon and often as possible.”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 January 2012

The Bent Mast is great. In a way that few places can hope to accomplish, it nicely filters out the wusses, whiners, snobs, hipsters, and douches leaving you with only a few confused tourists and the truly hardy Victorian drunks who have managed to pull it together for an evening out that ends later than 10 pm. Given its select clientele of awesome people only (the confused tourists tend to potter off in due time), it's often nearly vacant, which is exactly how I happen to like my bars.

The servers are hilarious and, quite refreshingly, don't even pretend to give a damn. But if you're friendly to them, they're often quite friendly right back.

It has a good bar, understands the true spirit of "happy hour," and is a wonderful place to get casually sloshed on a school night. The food sucks (although it improves when paired with hard liquor), and the decor is chintzy at best, but perhaps better described as appalling. The premises smell faintly of moth balls and urine...

Long live the Bent Mast!

Typical pub but had surprising good food and enjoyed the Trivia Pursuit while waiting for our food.

“Nice spot for a spot of lunch”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 October 2011

Found this place by chance looking for a lunch spot in James Bay. Good food, nice beer and seating are outside under the trees. Would love to see a bit of work done to fix up the dodgy porch. Service was good too.

“Not Fine Dining, not really a restaurant, it's just our local pub!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 September 2011

Despite the new sign outside which says "Restaurant", it really isn't. It is our local pub, which means that the beer is pretty good and reasonably priced [for Canada]. As for the ambience, it is an Original, NOT a cookie-cutter franchise, which is good, and it can be really enjoyable to sit outside in the sun - or inside if it's rainy - and drink a pint. [The evening jam sessions used to be wonderful, until the Liquor Police put an end to them -- We taxpayers were having way too much fun.]

I would be astonished to learn that any of the many cooks [that's COOK, not CHEF] has ever seen the inside of a cooking school, let alone graduated. As for the servers, think minimum wage, minimum [zero?] training, and Attitude. They may give you serious lip if you dare to criticize, or even if you ask for the bill before they are darn good and ready.
[" I'm your server, not your servant! "]
Apparently nobody has ever explained to them that this could be Bad for Business.

So, stick to the beer, and enjoy the Bent Mast for what it is. If you must order food pick something that is hard to mess up, and keep your expectations under control. [Restaurant - Not, see above].

If you want good food and wines, prepared by folks who really care and know their trades, go 100m down Simcoe Street to Heron Rock or Sips. Yum.
