We were looking for a small meal after a week of indulgences and with most restaurants full we happened on Tavola with many empty tables. We were somewhat cautious but decided to see what was available. We were told they only had two small tables available the rest were reserved. We ordered 2 summer salads and a beverage with a cookie plate for dessert. What a treat, the salads were gourmet as well as the dessert. The staff were very accommodating and the menu items were very inventive and inviting. Give this gem a chance and I am sure you will be rewarded.

Excellent food made by a chef who knows his stuff. Nothing overpowered by seasonings and everything cooked to perfection. Small cozy restaurant with big heart in the kitchen!

Another great little find on Water Street was Tavola. Crystal is super friendly and fun to talk to, she makes you feel like you're at home. I had the seafood platter which was a mix of mussels, salmon, shrimp...and cod tongues. Never tried these before but I always like to try something new so I asked Crystal and she compared them to calamari in terms of texture. As it turns out they were even better than calamari! And here's a hint, they're not really tongues either. ;)

My husband and I were extremely fortunate to get the last unreserved table tonight. We were walking by trying to decide where to eat and stopped to look at the menu. The lasy from the store next door said it was good so we went in. Had to sit st a high table as it was the only one left-this was the only bad part as I am 5foit so was t the most comfy seating. The food more than made up for it. We had the biscuits with maple butter and caprese salad to start. The biscuits were fluffy and tender and served warm with awesome not overly sweet maple butter. The tomatoes in the caprese salad were red but quite hard and not flavourful but the local boccochini was wonderful. We both opted for the baked cod special. It was exceptional. Super tender, perfectly cooked and the flavour was amazing. It was served over roasted potatoes, scallions, mushrooms, leeks and kale. Portion was a good size. Dessert wast heir vinegar cake (first time I had heard of this) with local berries and roasted candied nuts. Portion was huge and probably better shared. Cake was dense and a little dry but not overly sweet and interesting flavour. We also ordered the chocolate plate. Three different chocolate desserts. Again big portion so sharing would be better. Interesting flavours. My favourite was the chocolate cheese. Wine and beer list small but so is the restaurant. Busy place but great service. Highly recommend this tiny gem. COD was extraordinary. Reservations recommended.

Crystal will meet you at the door and make you feel like you have been frequenting the place for years and are best friends. Then you sit down to a fabulous meal from start to finish. I had the seafood platter which was to die for only exceeded by this chocolate plate that finished the meal, pushing it into the spectacular realm! If you are in St. John's don't miss the chance to meet Crystal and treat your palate to a culinary experience that will be long remembered!
