Come to see sunlight filter through birch and alder, then shimmer over quiet waters at sunset, before streaking golden-pink through a panorama of night time clouds. To watch firelight glow inside the tepee as it flickers over focused faces. We are learning a bit about the Dene way - the Dene, keepers of this vast and stunning land here. Step softly on the 'summer snow' of caribou moss as you search for succulent red berries of kinnikinnick or a delicate orange cloudberry, hiding beneath the curled yellow leaves of Labrador tea. Watch for the glistening mushrooms tucked away in crevices of sprawling ancient pink boulders, appliquéd with lichen rosettes. Come to watch the raven's antics and the squirrels as they fly from tree to tree. Come to hear the loons chortle to each other, while grasshoppers click out mating songs. And finally search the night sky for the first shimmer of green, followed by swirling This is the true north for people like me. A pilgrimage worth whatever it takes, because you will never forget this.
