Took a spin on the trail with my X-over bike, 700C wheels and no problems. Nice surface and very peaceful.

Thank Mike S

I accept that this trail is the only way of crossing Eastern Ontario without cycling on roads, but it's not built for road tyres at all. I biked all the way from Ottawa to Montreal on a road bike yesterday and it was a soul-destroying experience. The vast majority of the trail is dense gravel that makes it impossible to exceed 20km/h even in the most friendly areas. Then there are completely unkept stoney areas that have clearly been ravaged by farm machinery. There's also NOTHING in the way of services. Not even water fountains at the pavilions. Ok, this is the country we're talking about and I wasn't expecting shops and cafes along the route...but if you're attempting the whole trail you are definitely going to run out of water. A few fountains does not seem a lot to ask. My day improved massively when I reached Quebec.

The Prescott-Russell Recreational Trail's website also suggests some on-road cycling trips in the area. We went for a ride along the 'Cycle the Ottawa River" route, and it was great! This route hugs the south shore of the Ottawa River from Ottawa to Hawkesbury (& beyond). We stopped for lunch in Rockland. Several little towns don't have any restaurants, so plan your trip accordingly. You ride through farmland and countryside, and the roads are in very good condition. We saw hardly any car traffic and no trucks at all. Motorcyclists seem to like this route too, but they always give a bicycle plenty of room. We're looking forward to doing it again soon.

We biked 20 km of the trail from Vankleek Hill road 34 heading west to Boundary Rd and back to the parking. The trail was crushed dust and great for biking. We passed only two washrooms (port-a-pottie) the whole time. Some great sights on the trail. No services so you will need to bring the required water and snacks. In each of the towns there is some paved area to make it wheelchair accessible.
