Booked a bed for my little sister last night at HI hostel since she wast stuck DT because of the huge snowstorm. When my sister arrived they told her sorry they can't give her the bed even though she already paid and it was confirmed because they wanted to save it for foreigners.... It was 10pm at night and they wouldn't let her in. All they could say is..sorry with no solution. They sent her back outside in the storm to figure it out herself. Re read the whole confirmation and booking page and this condition about "foreigners" was not mentioned anywhere....Really unimpressed with the service here, would not recommend.

If you are traveling alone, this is a good option. If you are a couple or family, Montreal offers much better choices for equal money. I highly recommend an auberge (B&B) instead.

The location is very convenient to the Metro and Bell Centre, where I attended a show. Overnight parking is available in a garage next to the Bell Centre for $25, but do not park on the street near the hostel. This is reserved for residents with a sticker. Cheaper options include commuter lots off the island, if you don't mind taking the excellent Metro. Keep in mind that Metro passes are $3.25CAN per trip, per person, though.

I've stayed in many hostels in Canada, US and Europe, and was traveling alone this time, so this was a logical choice for the price and location. Compared to other hostels, however, I rate this one average or slightly below. It's in an older, run-down building in a construction zone. The desk staff were very friendly, but no one else in the building was particularly welcoming. The bar area in the basement felt like a private club, and I wasn't a member. Not the vibe I'm used to in hostels.

My en suite room in a 4-person dorm was comfortable enough, but it didn't look particularly clean. Could be that it's just old and needs an update. It is a big bonus to have a bathroom in each room, though. There's a vent fan that runs constantly so sleeping was easy. The building was quiet when I stayed, although I imagine the construction could be noisy on a weekday.

The included breakfast was a large assortment of cold cereal, hard boiled eggs, fruit, bagels, oj, coffee, tea and condiments. Fine for most people, but if you are gluten or dairy free, I recommend eating elsewhere or bringing your own food. There's a kitchen.

Overall, the place is good for what it is, but I doubt I'll stay here again. Too many other good options in Montreal with better parking, vibe, hot breakfast, and comfort.

Hello and thank you for the extensive review. True that there is an abundance of types of accommodation in Montréal, so everyone ought to find the perfect spot to fulfill their needs.
As for us, a backpacker hostel, operated by backpackers, and for backpackers, I believe that all backpack travellers will fully enjoy their stay with us!
Happy Travels,

Nic, hostel manager

Friendly staff. Clean, cheap, and excellent service. Well organized. Great continental breakfast. Good for travellers on budget, HI Montreal got a lot of events and they will help you explore Montreal.

Room Tip: best rates, accessibility, enjoyable

Clean, modern, ( slightly squeaky bunkbeds so you wake your bunk neighbor, but this seems to be more of a standard with ALL hostels.)

Kitchen and small "pub" in the basement, and vending machines, ( though I wish they'd labelled that a little more apparent, they were off in a corner easily missed). I was only there one night so didn't partake of all the events or amenities but it all seems well organized and well run.Albeit slightly huffy counter clerk when i checked in.

Comfy duvets and linens, and free breakfast ( juice, coffee, cereal, fruit, bagels and hardboiled eggs).

Close to downtown, 10 bucks cab from the VIA station. Not sure about airport.

Not accessible as far as I can tell. It's stairs. You may want to double check this, before booking, there are main floor rooms too, but still stairs to get to the basement kitchen, and from the street.

Room Tip: all the rooms seem good.

The staff are lovely. Rooms and bathrooms are clean and comfortable. Each room comes with an ensuite bathroom which is a nice touch, meaning you don't have to remember your key if you need the bathroom in the middle of the night. The free breakfast is great and the kitchen is large and well equipped for cooking all of your own meals. They have lots of activities and the common area becomes a bar in the evening which is great if you want to socialise with other travellers! The location is good, right near a metro station and within walking distance of downtown. I would stay here again.
