The W brand is my favorite hotel, so I was pleased to see the W Montreal lived up to the high standards. My wife and I drove up from NYC for Labor Day weekend and booked the room with SPG points.
The location is excellently suited for those who want to check out the Vieux Montreal (5-10 minute walk) and also steps away from the Metro if you're more into Mont Royal part of town. It's a quick find coming off the highway. They could use a valet sign but it's fairly obvious where to pull up. They charge C$35/night for parking.
Check-in was prompt and while they were unable to upgrade me, they did give me a late checkout. The lobby was beautifully designed but it was not as large/welcoming as other W Hotels (for example, W Hollywood, W Washington DC or W San Diego). It was more like a comfortable waiting area than somewhere you'd lounge around with your friends. Additionally, the Concierge seemed to be overwhelmed as there was perpetually a line of guests waiting for advice.
Our room was on the 7th floor and small (think college dorm room) but we expected that since we booked with SPG points. Nevertheless, we weren't planning on spending a lot of time in the room so we didn't need a large space. BIG NOTE: The shower is see-through so that you can see everything from the bed area. Not a big deal if you're with your wife/husband, but obviously an issue for non-couples sharing a room.
The bed was amazing as you'd expect from a Starwoods property and the design was stylish and modern. Could have used some more outlets to recharge your phone/laptop but not a big deal. Also, the internet was C$20 for 24 hours (set start/end times of 12PM-1159AM).
The 3rd floor bar is where you want to be to start the evening and the hostess was very helpful securing a seat for my wife and I even if many of the seats were taken. We didn't make it to the ground floor bar but they had the velvet rope and clipboard out for the standard weekend party crowd.
Also for Americans, you can get by without using any Canadian dollars (except for Taxis). The W staff said they can call specific taxi's that accept US$ but we just walked everywhere. Also if using US credit cards (Canadians have a special chip in their credit cards), some restaurants allow you to tip after charging the card, but oddly enough, many others don't so you should have some Canadian dollars to tip just in case. Most of the time, they accepted US Visa and Mastercard, but smaller places (for example: Tim Horton's) didn't accept either.
