we arrived at this hotel middle of june 2008 to find the hotel, in a wonderful romantic location. the hotel was very clean and well kept and maintained. the staff were great and if your nice to them they are very very nice to you.the restaurants and food are to a very high standard the only problem was we would have liked to have had a bit more caribbean food. also as i am a vegetarian, they catered for my needs to my request. the supervisor in coco's, and the docksider restaraurant is called Louise, and a message to all guests, any problems, do inform louise as she is fantastic.
The room was cleaned every day and the maid did a very good job indeed. As the rooms are all on the beach, the views of the ocean are excellent. There are two beaches to choose from, one on the breezy Atlantic side, and one on the much calmer side called 'mamora bay', the bay is very quiet and beautiful . we found the watersport staff excellent, and if you would like to learn to sail, on the all inclusive hobbiecats sail boats, ask for a young man on the watersports called Wilson he is very experienced and helpful.
We ventured out of the hotel on several trips, as we always do when going to the caribbean, and highly recommend, The luxury jeep safari tour with a man called Elmo We booked this trip through the hotels owm tour desk. The jeep new and is air conditioned, a must on hot days, the jeep seats upto 5 people, he provides a great meal, and a complimentary bar all day long. he takes you to visit all the best sites in Antigua in just one day. We visited Nelson's Dockyard, Devils bridge, Shirley Heights, Betty's Hope, and even a small zoo in stingray city, great for the children. All of this and more was inclusive with the trip. A Must to all people wanting to experience the sights of Antigua.
We recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a romantic carribean getaway.Definately a 4 star and we would return.

We stayed at the Beach Club for one week from the 28th June to 5th July, and we found it to be extremly good, nearly perfect!

We have read many different reviews on this resort, so here is ours.

Overall it is a very good resort, but, lets start with the not so good points.
1 - The food is very simular every day at Coco's Resturant (this could have more variety)
2 - Some of the staff could smile and even pretend to be happy!

Bad points over, now on to the good points, the resorts has two beaches, yes two!! one is the windy beach which is very warm with a cool breeze all day long, we choose to stay here because of this breeze, the other beach is extremely hot and no breeze.
The rooms are of gernerous size with a large double bath!.hotel is kept extremely clean and tidy and 4 resturants to choose from every night.

Only wish we could have stayed longer!

We stayed at the "beach club" which is part of St James`s. The beach club being three buildings with two floors. The ground floor is refered to as being superior because they access the beach directly we found this to be most beneficial. The staff were welcoming when we arrived in reception, a hand shake and a rum punch is tradition it seems.

We had to wait 45 minutes for our room to be available, we really didnt mind this as we were comfortable in the lobby. However there were other tourists who had to wait over an hour. Our accomodation was spacious and clean, the fridge was fully stocked and refreshed every seven days. We did experience problems with the cleaners who on average would clean our room around five oclock in the afternoon..this often clashed with us getting back from Mamara beach and wanting to get ready for the evening meal.

Yes the beach club beach "coco side" is windy this is very welcome on a hot day and Mamara beach being calm and only a couple of minutes walk away! The surroundings are beautiful and there are lots of activities to keep you busy..snorkling..sailing..peddleboats..ect and all of which are free to do.

The villas at St James are gorgeous we wish we had known the difference between the two, "beach club" being very basic and not on the managers priority list and "St James villas" these are beautiful and the guests are treated better in our opinion.

The meals were very good, our four year old daughter was spoilt for choice she was offered a childs menu and could have also had what ever we were eating aswell. The pools are clean and most of the time empty same goes for the beaches we didnt have a problem finding a lounger at anytime.

We would strongly recommend going on the stingray city day trip this was the best activity we took part in, great value for money and the snorkling is tops there. We found virgin ahoy to be rushed and the boat was very overpacked...trying to find somewhere to sit was annoying and frustrating. The music was too loud even for my 28 years! basically we were shown alot of celebrity homes and taken to one of the worst beaches I have seen in Antigua..it was small and we all packed the beach up which is ridiculous, there are literally hundreds of beaches to choose from! The crew hope to get passegers drunk to boost spirits up which is fine if thats what your looking for enjoy!

We hired a car through our virgin rep, she was extremely helpful saving us alot of money. We initially enquired through the hotels hire service "dollar" this was double the price that we paid for our reps recommendation..the process was very simple and pain free and the use of the car was a godsend because once you leave the complex you get to see the real Antigua and all of the beaches Antigua has to offer. The roads are very bad but the locals seem to be careful drivers the speed limit at max is around 40.

Strongly advise mixing with the locals they are far more friendly and helpful compared to the rude hotel staff. We found most of the staff at the complex to be following a script there is hardly any genuinely nice waitresses, we found them to be dismissive and rude at times making it uncomfortable to dine. They will say the necessary pleasentries but it may not extend to a warm welcome. I can say this was the worst part of our holiday which is a shame because the complex as a whole is a very pleasant one..clean and wellkept with beautiful surroundings.

We have been astonished to read some of the recent abrasive and unsupportive essays on this beautiful resort. We are very widely travelled, but never before to the Caribbean. Antigua is rural and underdeveloped; you only have to sit on the 747 as it creaks in a U-turn to return down the runway trundling to the tiny terminal to get a clue of its status. However, the beach club at St James vaults effortlessly above this. The staff were charm and friendliness itself; the beachfront room was spotlessly clean and idyllic, with even a little bowl to wash the sand off your feet before you came in. The food was superb if unpretentious, fresh, local and plentiful. Cocos restaurant was the best; the Rainbow is a little like a school gymnasium - a single large high-ceilinged room, although the Piccolo Mondo 'fine dining' is actually nothing of the sort, unfortunately. We only had a barbeque at the fourth restaurant, Docksider. It was the best location, though. All-inclusive is what it says - even the champagne is freely available.

There are two beaches; one on the Atlantic coast, which comes with a free floor show from the resident pelicans arrowing in for their fish, which does actually have some small waves (shock) but the reef about 400m out to sea takes the energy out of them and it is perfectly safe for swimming and snorkelling. The other is a lagoon beach which is flat calm but does not enjoy the cooling sea breezes of the Atlantic beach and can get hot and sticky. Several people have commented there is seaweed on the Atlantic beach. It's a beach. It's by the sea. Sea has seaweed. Get over it. It's cleared daily in any case and the photo we append shows the amount present, as well as the tiny waves.

The final point in favour of this resort is something rarely mentioned - the clientele. You spend a surprising amount of time with people you have never met before and finding people you get on with can be a problem. We met plenty of nice people. That says a lot about the resort. We are not at all easy to please, but we'd be back tomorrow. Oh, and have a flutter on the crab racing. Best daft evening's fun going.

We stayed at the St. James Club the 2nd week of June. We had booked one of the villas. They are absolutely beautiful. They are updated and spacious. My husband and I have stayed all over the world and must say, it was a wonderful experience to stay at the villas at St. James Club. Most of the staff was very attentive and very very friendly. Compared to other Caribbean islands an excellent experience. The food was phantastic.
I do not understand people who complain about the staff and the food. Maybe they should just stay home and not enjoy experiencing a different culture and food other than McDonald.
It was a wonderful trip!
