We celebrated a birthday last Sunday, at the Hickory Shack after having been there a few times before. The service is excellent, food delicious, as is the craft beer and cider. But value, poor. R115 for a main with NO sides, which come as an extra, I may be wrong but thought on our last visit the main came with chips or coleslaw. It’s become a bit of a Tourist attraction maybe after being on Cape Talk with Pippa Hudson. Make no mistake the food is real good & service excellent, but, for what you get after an hour's drive out to lunch, pretty expensive! Hope the menu changes at some time, to include at least 1 side in the price, surely, one can not be served a single portion of meat on a board!! It probably wouldn't look so bad if they put up the price and included one side dish, not to appear to be such a rip off !

We stopped off at he Hickory Shack and were very pleasantly surprised at what we discovered, we had a great breakfast, which hit the spot and then smelt lovely smells coming from a side area - which on investigation were ribs! We returned a week later having rung ahead to order some ribs for a braai we were having, they were ready to collect and really delicious to eat.

We went to The Hickory Shack to celebrate an engagement. Good selection of craft beers .The food was delicious. We ordered the platter to have a taste of everything. The spare- rib was tender, juicy with home made sauces and salads to complement the meat.
Home made ice cream - divine !
Lovely expresso .
Will definitely return.

It's somewhat of a 'tourist destination' but the food and vibe is pretty good given where it is. Pork ribs were quite nice, beef brisket was ok....seemed like pork is the way to go here. Side dishes (beans and corn-salad) were nice. For outside of N.America it's pretty good BBQ and nice relaxed setting, craft beers, wines/drinks, worth a stop if you're in the area.

We pulled in for lunch a few days after New Year. The menu is small, but interesting. Quite a few of the dishes on offer were out of stock, however, as were most of the craft beers and ciders we would have liked to try.

Fair enough, it's on the main drag back to Cape Town and we were in the week everyone's headed back after the Christmas holidays. Still, perhaps planning ahead is an option?

So we each order a 'pressed apple juice', which looks, smells and tastes suspiciously like LiquiFruit, but comes in a honey jar. And a sparkling water, which also comes in a honey jar, which obviously saves a few bucks on stock purchases.

Then the beef brisket - a modest serving of beef at the price you'd normally expect to pay for meat and sides (R115), was tasty but a little overcooked in places. The chips, at R25 extra per serving, were indifferent, as was the R25 slaw. The sausage, named for New York, was tasty, but likewise looked rather lonely on its wooden board and kitchen paper, at R95 a pop. The BBQ sauce offered as sides tasted familiar - a mix of a few supermarket staples perhaps? The chilli sauce was way too hot for most people's tastes (disclaimer: we're chilli fiends) and the chilli mayo was fairly forgettable.

A couple at the table next to us shared three sides and one main, and the manager walked past and remarked 'only one plate?' Well, maybe they weren't that hungry, or maybe they had to forgo one main so they could afford their (shared) dessert, or maybe one of the dishes they wanted was out of stock?

On the plus side, the serving staff were super-friendly and attentive, and clearly well-trained. It's a lovely location, but be very careful if you're visiting on your way back to Cape Town, as turning right onto the N2 is no joke.

Attempted a visit to the bathroom before heading off, but since there is only one women's toilet in the restaurant and the person occupyng it at the time might have been reading a copy of Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace, I gave up. Really? One toilet for a roadside restaurant next to th N2, presumably targeting mainly travellers?

Make no mistake, the food is very nice, but hipster branding and a pretty location are no excuse for poor value. If it's good beer and expensive smokehouse-style food you're after, there are better options.
