Excellent B & B with a Warm Welcome

Review of The Smugglers
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 2 Aug 2020
After our tent collapsed in heavy rain and wind (it was 20 years old and had been well used), we were lucky to find space at the Smugglers. My husband and I along with my guide dog Pepsi were given a very warm welcome. Our room was lovely and we even had our lown patio with chairs and a table. The breakfast was excellent - so much to choose from and beautifully cooked. Thank you to Steve, Barbara and Sarah for making sure we had a lovely time in Cornwall. Will will certainly be returning.

Me and my husband stayed at the Smugglers for three nights during holiday in Cornwall and can really recommend the place! Delicious breakfast with a extensive menu and a nice view of the harbour from the breakfast room. Friendly, helpful and service minded hosts. The room called “Langley” was very private, spacious, had its own entrance and a small terrace. Absolutely lovely B&B!

      Forbes room 4 nights

If I could give a rating above the 5 I would.
Not only the room amenities differentiate the Smugglers but the owner/hostess
Barbara is in that class of people that truly has found their "calling" as a hospitality
business owner. She should be cloned & put in other B & B s!
We were met by Steve--it was a warm welcome and we soon were squared away on the parking situation & shown our room. Would have liked to had more opportunity
to talk with him. Barbara was soon available; she shared so much about seeing the area and nearby eating. When we commented on some of the B & B's amenities
she said that she wanted her guests to be as at home as possible and that she
wanted the rooms to be as user friendly & comfortable as possible. That was reflected in such nice touches as 2 suitcase stands 2 lounge chairs, French press
coffee in-room, plenty of clothes hangers, and possibly the most complete area
info package we have come across in a B & B room.
The Forbes room is charming in all respects: large yet cozy with ceiling beams,
a stone wall, and a private courtyard complete with patio furniture. The bed was very comfortable. The en-suite bath is large, though the shower is a bit small especially considering how large the room is.
Breakfast was another highlight of Smugglers. We had pick of tables-usually we
had one with a view of the fishing boat harbor just across the street. There are
multiple choices from a printed menu plus starters & supplements such as cereal
and fruit from a self-serve table. A nice touch is that as Barbara takes & serves orders she is willing to chat about your activities for the day (or previous day); she
is also more than willing to customize the menu offerings.
The parking is at the harbor lot about a block away--an ok walk but one must be mindful of the traffic as it is a busy street in front of the B & B to the parking & the
sidewalks (where they exist) are narrow.
The location of Smugglers in Newlyn puts it out of the hustle & bustle of Penzance
yet close enough to walk there for dining, etc. It is also a good place to do a walk to Mousehole.
We would happily stay at Smugglers again

Room tip: Forbes room is quiet, cozy and has the wonderful courtyard patio

After years of driving through Newlyn with the sole purpose of arriving in Mousehole this year we have spent time in and around Newlyn and have found this little gem which we have driven past many times. Delicious fresh fish cooked to perfection what a meal and what a lovely waitress. Nothing was to much trouble and with being able to sit in the window and look out over the evening activities of the bustling harbour was a revelation. We loved it and will definitely be back... just one very small thing and this is not a critiscm.. maybe a little background music might be appreciated nothing to loud etc it’s just at times even with 5 tables it was extremely quiet and felt a little like a library which discouraged conversation...please don’t take this as a critiscm just a comment... we loved it.

We had a very warm welcome from Barbara which was appreciated. We stayed in 'Langley' which was a sheltered room with its own terrace (lovely) towards the back of the building. There were some very nice touches - fresh milk, jar of shortbread rather than packets, a cafetiere and coffee (rare to get that in a b&b) and Barbara was very helpful and responded straight away to all questions and requests. Breakfast was good although not excellent (more choice of cereals and fruit would be nice and the veggie breakfast was perfectly OK but poached eggs a little overcooked and scrambled watery). The view was absolutely gorgeous from the breakfast room. We had to leave early due to illness and Barbara was very understanding although we still ended up paying for the nights we hadn't been able to stay for (understandably, refund would only be given if the room could be re-let and we have to assume that it wasn't). So lots of really lovely touches in this b&b and Barbara and Stephen run a very good business. There's a parking permit so that you can park in the harbour carpark for £3.50 a day. We liked very much the decor of our room and the fact that the rooms were named after famous painters of the Newlyn school, too. However - and for us this will always be a deciding factor in whether we'd book a place again - I would have to say that the bed/mattress, whilst probably OK for somebody who can sleep anywhere, was not good for aching joints and produced a bad night, as did the loud creak of floorboards right outside the bathroom! This, coupled with the fact that you can hear the people in the room behind very clearly indeed (conversations, coughing, yawning) meant that what should have been a restful break was, whilst very lovely in parts, not quite as good as it could have been. Other rooms may of course be different, this is only based on our particular room. So overall whilst we loved the personal welcome and many of the thoughtful touches, we felt that the comfort factor could have been better in the room itself.

Room tip: 'Langley' has thin walls! Also would suggest taking a mattress topper with if you don't like hard mattresses.

Thank you for taking the time to leave your review, I am a little surprised that there are quite a few negative points as the impression I had from you was that you were more than happy with your stay, you even told me that this was the best place you had ever stayed, so I am really at a loss as to why you left such negative comments. I have to say that the breakfast comments are the ones that have surprised me the most, I really feel that a choice of six cereals, two different fruit compotes, cake, biscotti, fruit and plain yogurts and a large plate of fresh mixed fruit, including apricots, melon, pineapple, plums and satsumas doesn't seem to be a poor choice especially considering we only have four rooms. we also offer eight different hot cooked to order breakfast choices, I have to disagree that the poached eggs are overcooked and the scrambled eggs are watery, we have nothing but positive feedback from our other guests regarding our breakfast.
On checkout you went out of your way to assure me that you were very happy with everything and you felt bad having to leave early, you referred to our trip advisor comments and said you could fully understand why we had such good reviews and that you would leave a nice review for me.
I can only assume that the reasons behind the negative comments are because you had to leave early and pay for the full stay, your insinuation that you had to 'assume' that I did not re- let the room is incredibly insulting as this would suggest that I am in in some way dishonest, I did my best to re- let the room but unfortunately on this occasion it did not happen.

My partner and I think this is the best B&B we have ever stayed in. Why? Helpful and friendly host. Spacious rooms with every conceivable amenity. Wide choice of high-quality and delicious breakfasts. Scenic location overlooking Newlyn Harbour.
