So this is where we ended up having refused to stay in a room at the Amberely Inn Stroud. After sitting in the carpark on the internet trying to find somewhere to stay they had a last-minute cancellation. We were close to spending the night in our car so we are grateful. All of the staff deserve recognition, they can't do enough for their guests without exception. However, the room, no 5, was very tired, old bathroom, we didn't use the shower, peeling paint etc. However, what appeared to be new single beds that were comfy and clean. Axbridge is a pretty village but not much to do with a dog! Still looking for that perfect dog friendly stopover on the journey to Devon.

The pictures on the website paint a very different picture to what is seen in reality. The staff are very friendly and always willing to help with whatever you need.

We arrived approx 4:30pm and realised there were no day staff, the bar was not open until 6:00pm and the only person at the hotel was the hotel manager.

She was very friendly however she is a heavy smoker and this is noticeable throughout the hotel. If you like a musky smell and the smell of smoke, this is the hotel for you.

Unfortunately, as an asthmatic this proved problematic and not what you expect from an alleged 4* hotel.

Our room looked nice on the face of it but in need of some clear, basic improvements. Bathroom tiles loose and crumbled. Mirror shattered. Layer of dust on the mantelpiece. Mould on the outside of the shower. Dirty towels. The list is not exhaustive.

The hotel manager spends a lot of her time smoking out the front of the hotel and if your room is facing the front this naturally creeps into the room.

The food in the restaurant was frozen, not fresh.

This hotel was most probably a beautiful place to stay and well worth its four stars but now, I would struggle to give it 3.

A far more comfortable night would be had in a travelodge.

Myself and my partner booked our stay last minute as we had a car accident earlier that day so we weren't entirely sure what to expect.

Turned out to be a fantastic stay. The hotel itself beautiful and the staff were exceptionally friendly and really went out of their way to make us feel comfortable and looked after.

The hotel is situated in a square in the centre of axbridge. Everyone we interacted, whether it was at the hotel, pub or a local coffee shop, they were all incredibly kind, friendly and hospitable.

The room were very clean, cosy with plenty of storage.

Being vegan and booking something last minute out of necessity, I was worried about the options available to me.

They really went out of their way to offer a variety options for both breakfast and dinner (even if it meant to go out an purchase vegan specific alternatives, they did it - massively Impressed!)

The staff/hospitality was exceptional and really made our stay truly enjoyable especially amidst our circumstances at the time.

Would definitely stay again -
A real gem!

As a group of cyclists we based ourselves at the Oak House for rides in/around Cheddar Gorge.
The hotel was clean, the food was good and the staff we great I would go back there again.
The staff including Marina were flexible regarding our needs and regarding our registration/access, which enabled us to get out riding - the main purpose of our visit.
There are other parking opportunities near to the hotel -so parking outside is not an issue.

Poor from the start. No reception, no daytime staff, had to carry my case up steep staircase to my room (I am 73 and arthritic). TV did not work, vanity light in 10' X 4' bathroom did not work, toilet not secured to the floor, no pressure in cold mixer tap in bath, no extractor fan. No room service -- change of towels and replacement of toiletries only on the evening before we left. Evening staff pleasant but untrained, food OK but limited, pizza or everything with chips; chicken burger, lamb burger, beef burger. Decoration in the room was shabby -- paint peeling off the walls. Breakfast in room a disaster as nowhere to sit to eat it. Room situated above hotel boiler room, generators starting up during the night and reverberating through the floor and ceiling. Latches on both windows were insecure and 1950s double glazing unit also broken and ineffective. How did booking.com's vetting system allow this place to be listed as five star?

Room tip: There are no good rooms for the prices being charged.
