DOMINION HILL COUNTRY INN – INTERESTING SPOT/GREAT OWNER

We spent a night in early December in a small cabin at the Dominion Hill Country Inn between St. Stephen and St. George, N.B. Our grandson had a 2 day hockey tournament and we decided to stay in the area. Our stay was in December (dark early) in a very quiet, scenic area and we were gone after breakfast so our exploration was limited BUT we would have no reason not to go back. Be sure to check out their website to learn more about nearby attractions, trails, the very close waterfall and tidal area. The main building is a century old with a rich history and fine decor. There are a number of options for accommodation ranging from the old Manor house to glamping. We stayed in one of the smaller cottages (there are larger cottages as well) and it was fine for our short stay (a couple).

The owner/innkeeper (Michael) was wonderful, full of history and put out a very nice breakfast. It's minutes from the highway, away from city lights and relatively peaceful (of course, our stay was early December). Check out the options that best suit your needs. We were more than satisfied and hope to stay there again. THANK YOU MICHAEL!!!

We stayed one night on the 2nd floor in the main building. The room was lovely and quiet, the bed was okay, the place has been redone and while not perfect, it is very charming. I explored the trails on the property. Staff were very friendly and accommodating. The breakfast was yummy and plentiful. A real find off the beaten path.

Overall, this property is more run down than led to believe by the website. Our accommodation, the Lupine Cottage was not clean. Walking on the floor with bare feet resulted in dirt and crumbs sticking to your feet. A black hair in the shower and worst of all, we spilled a bit of bottled water on the bed when unpacking and therefore pulled back the sheets to air dry and discovered a large yellow stain on the mattress. The main living area had a sour smell. The breakfast casserole was overdone and no fresh fruit other than bananas. The most disappointing aspect of the visit was the attitude of the staff. We arrived early and asked if checking in early was possible. We understand fully if this is not possible as the stated checkin time is 3 p.m. however, the responses from two different staffers was to look at their watch and ask Incredulously "wow, what time is it" (it was after noon). When pressed if they could check to see if someone was in the room the night before we were quoted the check in policy of 3 p.m. We were told to come back then. No offer of using a sitting area, getting a drink of water or storing luggage. Basically, no warmth or hospitality whatsoever. This is not fine dining nor an upscale country inn but more like a camp. Nothing wrong with a camping, camp type of experience as we love to camp, just did not live up to its marketing. Upon checkout but were not asked "how was your stay" or anything to the sort, just leave the key.

Your review is deeply concerning as we pride ourselves in our hospitality, service, and cleanliness. Unfortunately your visit -- at the end of the busiest week of our year -- encountered a team that was very tired.
I have meet with the staff and had a complete review of all procedures and policies. These lapses will never happen again. The work to restore this historic estate is ongoing and every building has been completely renovated in the last three years. The new construction continues and we hope to open another new building before the end of the month, and continue restoration of the gardens that add so much beauty to our property.

We were looking forward to our first glamping trip in the woods where we presumed it would be quiet and peaceful. We did not read any reviews that said that this property is located next to a major highway. If you don't care about road noise, then Dominion Hill is a nice choice. But we found it very difficult to relax and enjoy Nature while feeling like you are sleeping next to a road. The management is very nice and the accommodations are fine. There are rooms inside the Inn, which I'm sure are quieter, but if you choose glamping, beware the highway.

This campus is a historic estate consisting of a main building (inn), several cottages/cabins, and glamping tents, nestled in the woods just off and above the trans-Canada. The Lupine cabin has a kind size bed (actually two singles pushed together!) and a spacious sitting room. It was nice to open the windows and smell the fresh air. Breakfast is made fresh daily, first come first served. We loved the ambiance of the property..
