Surprising gem tucked away off a dirt road in Los Pargos. Extensive French menu and wine list, great food. The night we went they had tapas for $5 so we were able to sample quite a few different items, like crispy duck ravioli and spicy shrimp. Plus items off the regular menu, like lobster ravioli. Great dessert menu, including creme brulee and mango cobbler. This place is definitely worth the drive. Closed now for the rainy season. We will definitely be back in November.

After 5 dinners at the various eating establishments of the JW Marriott in Guanacaste, we were jaded and needed to get away for something different. We had a recommedation from a fellow airline passenger so went in search of a local place to try. We found Villa Deveena. This is actually a mini resort, hotel, stashed away in the woods but it has its own restaurant and what a restaurant. OK so it is Central American casual, complete with outdoor seating, overhead fans and an invitation to wear flip flops, but the owner Chef, Patrick Jamon is world renoun, having cooked for Presidents, Ford, Carter, Bush, Clinton; having shared time with Julia Childs,

OK, the service was all by the family of the Chef. They are all there because they care and because they love their lives. The service was over the top wonderful, happy, involved in our satisfaction.

We had drinks before dinner. Mojitos, Margaritas, Bloody Mary (I had mine very spicy hot). My wife had one of their many Chardonnays by the glass. Very decent and capable bar. All delicious.

Nice menu, French influence. We had home made Pate, include Foie Gras which was spectacular. A special of the night was Surf and Turf only because their supplier had lobster caught that afternoon. The Crustaceans were served split. The 1/2 tails were around 5oz ea and they were sweet and tender with exactly the right amoung of chew. The Turf was perfectly grilled Ribeye.

The food was so good that it deserves to be the star of this review, but so sorry, it was the ambiance that made us want to stay well beyond dinner. We had a visit from almost every family member including Patrick. We found that the reason he and the family came to Costa Rica was because one of his sons loved to surf. The family vacationed there and then almost immediately decided to settle there. Having come from Venice, California, you can imagine the culture shock. No problems. The tourist and well off locals (many American and European retirees) found them and made sure they got off on the right foot. There is more to this story but suffice it to say, we loved our visit, we loved the food, we loved the family. We hope to visit them again someday......and maybe settle there ourselves. We already have a favorite restaurant.

And oh, dessert was absolutely wonderful as well with a chocolate volcano and vanilla bean creme brule, we left smiling. Of course it was my buddies turn to pick up the bill, for four Turf and Surfs. Ouch.

This was the best meal we had in our last visit to Costa Rica. We were so happy and satisfied that we went back but it was unfortunately closed that day. We visited the restaurant for lunch with a party of 6 and all of us were satisfied with the choices we made, the food was excellently prepared and nicely presented. The dessert was also fantastic!

Simply put: Eat Here!

Who knew that down a dusty, crater-ridden dirt road we'd find the best meal of our lives. The parrot fish ceviche was to die for. Braised short ribs melted in my mouth. The rib eye special was the best beef I've ever tasted. All topped off by Mango Cobbler.

It's an expensive evening out, but as good as any meal you'll find in NYC, LA, or Rome.
