Our room with two seperate beds had its own bathroom. The walls showed marks of dead mosquitos. The breakfast is basic. The restaurant is closed on sundays, but it is listed in the swedish white guide a special list for excellent cooking. Very friendly personal.

Here is an idyllic rural setting. This classic Falu Red wooden hotel is right by the canal and to the front overlooks the lock in the tiny town of Borensberg in the Swedish "Lake District" [there are lakes all over Sweden but there are some seriously big lakes around here]. To the rear is Motala Ström, the lovely river which runs alongside the canal for several miles at this point. The Göta Canal goes right across the widest part of Sweden all the way from Gothenburg to Stockholm. It's a wondrous piece of engineering and, when it's not iced up through the winter, still operates commercially. The traffic is composed mainly of tourists in their yachts and motorboats these days with several specialist cruise ship companies taking 4 slow, laid back days to cross the country. It's pleasant just sitting with a glass of cool white wine at the front of the hotel and watching the boats coming and going as they tie up at the hotel jetty waiting for the lock to open and the road bridge to raise.
It's very much a boutique hotel - the current owners have been there for 10 years and have worked hard to bring it up to scratch. And they have succeeded gloriously. The whole place has scrubbed up well in muted Swedish greys and natural wood tones. Bedrooms are varied and open from a common lounge area on each of the two upper stories. Ours was small but lovely and fully 'en suite'. Others we saw are, given the hotel's vintage, quite large. Prices vary depending on size and view.
Staff are helpful, friendly and - of course - all speak perfect English (and probably German).
There's an excellent Swedish style breakfast buffet. The lunchtime menu is very seasonal. The dinner menu a delight and the wines are well chosen - and, given Swedish drink taxes, quite reasonably priced.
Truly a genuine classic hotel and an absolutely MUST visit if you are anywhere near the middle of Sweden by way of plane, car or boat.

Room tip: The front overlooks the canal - quite busy during the summer but just with peaceful boaty traffic. The back overlooks the river.
