After reading the negative reviews we really didn’t know what to expect but can honestly say I don’t know why anybody would complain so much yes it has a couple of flaws (little pillows and restaurant queues but please read on for more info) but overall it’s a great holiday and amazing value for money. There is a great variety of food and the cocktails are very nice, the restaurants are very high quality for this type of hotel. The queuing system is a little irritating and could be reworked but the advantage is you don’t only have a couple of visits each week like other hotels you can go as many times as you like we actually are in the restaurants 12 nights out of 14. In other reviews when people say it was impossible to get in they are lying because we turned up around 5.45 each day and got a slot easily. Obviously if you turn up at 7.30 demanding to eat right at that moment it won’t work that is logical. We saw many people abusing staff because they couldn’t be bothered to wait and turn up when they want. Staff are friendly and hotel very clean. The biggest part of this holiday is the nature available around the hotel! We saw howlers, capuchin, spider monkeys most day and fed capuchin and spider monkeys. We saw whales from the beach most days and plenty of beautiful birds, butterflies and iguanas. The hotel kindly gave us a room overlooking the adventure park which meant we could see howlers early each day. We did plenty of excursions all with Erick on the beach, I HIGHLY recommend Erick he has a very friendly service he understood our budget and what we wanted to do and built it from there. We paid nearly HALF the price of TUI and had a better experience instead of buses of 50 we were in groups of 4 or 6. Erick is very nice and will show you nature around the beach. You can find him with t shirts with his name on. Finally I really hate when people give this hotel a negative review because of “the locals” everybody should be free to enjoy this hotel especially to enjoy their OWN country I found all Costa Rican guests friendly and respectful, yes they enjoy the bar and it can get loud but just as much as brits/ Americans/ Canadians just because it’s a different language doesn’t make them and people. Pool is also lovely and beach well cared for. A great experience for nature lovers thanks RIU for such a pleasurable stay.

We have a nice group of 6-8 people a yr that take a all inclusive trip for the past 5 yrs so far and we only stay at Rui hotels because they have been the best experiences for us regardless the locations we have already gone to. They all been great. Great unfortunately to we went here and we will never go back. It was horrible from the minute we arrived compare to other Rui's we've been to. We didn't feel welcome from the door. You walk by most employee's and if you didn't acknowledge them or say hello first no one would acknowledge you as you walk pass them. Room door open with and actual key for lock on the door, which gave me trouble every time I went to my room to get in. Now you have to worry not to loose the key or pay a fee if you do. Pillows on the bed were tiny in size had to ask for more. Pool bar and surrounding area was the worst. If you are allergic to bee's this is not the place for you. You will be under attack. I honestly felt bad for the bartenders who had to deal with swarm of bees all around them all day every second of the day. Horrible for us and even worst for them. The beach was not any better. Its the one thing I look forward to the most but from the moment you step into the water you are walking and stand on sharp rough rocks the whole entire time no mater how deep you went in, it was horrible. I lasted 5mins and never went back. Other beaches in the area that we got to see and go in while out on a tour did not have that issue. There restaurants have no reservation policy which you would think would be great but its not. They take only a certain amount of people a night "A CAP number' as they called it and then you are sh@t out of luck. The cap # is unclear but lets just say we were about 10th in line and by the time we hit the front door 10 mins later they reached there cap #. go figure. To make the experience even worst we got into the so call steak house restaurant great right/ wrong we had to deal with stray dogs walking around to all the tables looking for food which didn't help when one table does give them some more come in. But the icing on the cake was when the raccoons followed. At that point we got up and left. The worst experience ever. My group would not go back even if you gave us a free trip back. Sorry but this trip was horrible and I wanted to be back home after my 1st day there. I have never left a bad review for anyone ever but this trip was so bad I had to. I truly hope your experience is better then mines was, if you still decide to come here. Good Luck.

Firstly, if you smoke, this country is not for you. Costa Rica has some very draconian rules regarding smoking in or near buildings. You cannot even smoke on the balcony of your room. This is the law of the country apparently.
The hotel was clean, tidy and the staff great. The rooms are very spacious, but in need of updating, the furniture is very "gothic".
The food in the spacious dining room was fine, and there was always something for the most fussy of eaters. We sat in the section just to the left as you enter the main door. The waitress was Delma, very attentive and always helpful.
There was no shortage of sunbeds, but the amount of trees around the pool meant there were more shaded areas then sunny ones. Again you cannot smoke around the pool. The beach is great for catching the sun, you can smoke there, but there is no beach bar or had beach service for drinks, so it's a walk to the poolbar.
There are 2 smoking areas within the hotel, one behind the Ocotel Restaurant and one in the gardens close to the theatre.
As a well travelled "englishman" it hurts me to say, but take all US Dollars as everything is priced in dollars and the conversion to Colons is not always "accurate". They are not keen on ££'s.
All in all, it is a nice hotel.
The walk to the smoking areas kept us fit and we met and talked to smokers of many countries.
You can also see some varied wildlife within the hotel grounds from monkeys to humming birds and the midnight visits from the racoons.

We are currently staying at riu guanacaste. Arrived on Monday lovely hotel lovely welcome and very clean. We were having a lovely holiday. However Friday arrives along with hundreds of locals and their screaming children. They have no respect for personal space and are beyond rude. The staff are no longer interested in anyone that doesn't speak Spanish everything is aimed at the locals. Haven't heard any English music all weekend the entertainers are speaking constantly in Spanish. The lunch restaurant cannot cope with the amount of people (I'm guessing the hotel is now at full capacity) either with food amounts or cleanliness. we come away in September for a peaceful holiday if I wanted this craziness I would go away in August. Costa Rica is a beautiful country and worth a visit but choose another hotel. Such a shame I'll be here next weekend when the locals will arrive again.

The hotel is a 2.5 star at best and the rooms need updating. I shouldnt have got an all inclusive package. There is only a 2 hour window for dinner otherwise you're reduced to the buffet which I didnt like. You must be standing in line at 6pm just to get in a restaurant or on the waiting list like a heard of cattle for dinner and they dont do reservations. The hours for food are just terrible period and the snacks they offer were horrible. They were sandwiches sitting in a fridge that you had to warm up in the microwave and the sandwiches didnt look edible. The food left a lot to be desired and I cant say I would ever stay here again just off of that alone.
