Hampton Inn, Vancouver, Airport

First, let me say there are some things here I liked.

The bathroom had clearly been revamped recently and was stylish. Ditching the tub for a big walk-in shower was a good decision. (I again note my objection, shared with all the Hampton Inns that have redone bathrooms, that the shower head is mounted so high a 5'4" woman cannot reach it to aim the spray where she wants it to go.) The door to the bathroom, mirrored and on chic rollers visible in the room, looked awesome and operated in silence. There was no nightlight, but a halfway decent hair dryer counterbalanced its absence. We had two bath towels when we'd have preferred more, since we wanted to clean up a second time before dinner. There was a single towel bar, no way to hang another to dry.

The room had two chairs, one at the desk, one an easy chair with small ottoman, both comfortable. The ottoman was right-sized to slide fully under the chair, never in the way. The small side table was useful and light enough to move where it was most wanted.

The sound insulation seemed good. In our room, I never heard the voices of other guests.

And there the good parts end, decidedly outweighed by the avoidable negatives.
--The fire door near our room was blocked open, in disregard of the sign saying the door must be kept closed. Bad enough this was its state during the hours renovations were underway on our floor (scarier still when you read how many fires start during construction work), but the fact that it remained blocked open overnight was unsafe and absolutely unacceptable.
--The desk clerk's smile crossed all language barriers, but I had trouble understanding her English. I'm a huge fan of multicuturalism, but employees working with the public need to be better able to communicate in one (or both) of the country's official languages.
--The elevator's response time was sometimes unacceptably long. One of them clunked and thudded in ways I found disturbing.
--As we approached our room for the first time, we were struck by how filthy and spotted the carpets in the corridor were. This was grime ground in over a period of months and many, many spots. Even if the hotel plans to replace it soon as part of its ongoing renovation, it needs a carpet shampoo in the meantime.
--On opening the door to our room, the floral scent was enough to make my eyes water. After ten minutes or so, I became "nose-blind" to it, but each time we returned, it hit all over again. What other odor is so bad it has to be so heavily masked?
--Huge negative: while our bed's linens were changed, neither bottom sheet fit the bed. The flat sheet on our first night could not be tucked in on either side and was therefore a twisted wreck by morning. The fitted sheet the second night was too small and only the two corners visible when the bed was made up were actually covered. The corners at the foot were a sleep-disturbing bother.
--We were on the fifth floor. Our floor's ice machine did not work. We visited the fourth floor, then the third, also with non-functioning ice machines, and finally found a working one on the second floor. During our stay, it was often out of ice. No surprise there.
--Like many hotels under the Hilton umbrella, the bedding was a top sheet and a heavy comforter. It's difficult to sleep at the right temperature with no middle ground such as a blanket or coverlet. I was cold with only the sheet, sweaty-hot adding the comforter despite making the room cooler for sleep.
--The TV is undersized for the distance from which it's viewed. The furniture arrangement makes it possible to watch TV only from the bed. You literally cannot move the chairs to a position in which they face the TV without the armoire blocking part of the screen.
--Two of the room's light bulbs were out, not checked or replaced during our stay.
--The ceiling sported a number of black marks. It was almost funny how often I had to confirm each was still not a spider, until I found the spider.
--While it started out clean, the breakfast room not kept tidy. Instead, three employees chatted at front desk while ignoring tables laden with debris and carpet sport lots of dropped bits of food, broken to smaller pieces and ground in underfoot. I understand that may not be the job of the desk employees, but a well-run place would not have multiple employees standing idle while conditions deteriorated to this level.

All in all, this was not a hotel I would stay at a second time. I cannot recommend it. For a Hampton Inn, this is quite unusual.

The newly renovated ground floor is nice and the desk staff friendly. However, the rest of the property is tired and our bathroom was moldy and generally disgusting. Housekeeping and cleanliness is subpar at best and this property is not up to brand standards. Definitely not worth the price. Breakfast is standard Hampton fare and no issues there.

Room Tip: Get something renovated or don't stay here

We stayed for one night before an early flight. The hotel is handy to the airport, but is in a part of Richmond that is still quasi industrial, has a lot of construction going on, has few sidewalks and is generally pretty marginal. The front desk staff were very friendly and helpful. This review is no reflection their service or hospitality. The room was nice, not huge, but comfortable and yes, outdated. I did not notice any damp or musty smell as another reviewer noted. There are signs up everywhere advising of the renovations that are underway. The quality of the hotel will be greatly improved once they are done. The closest restaurants are a short walk away - no facilities other than the breakfast room on site - and as noted above, this is not a pleasant place to walk. Heavy traffic. No sidewalks on some blocks. Construction zones. We will not stay here again for that reason. Breakfast was good. Love the waffles!!!!

Hotel is sadly lacking in updates, so feels musty and dirty. Don't stay here unless you read it's been completely renovated. Staff was nice, location good, but that doesn't make up for cleanliness at all

Location is very convenient to the Vancouver Airport, and fairly close to the light rail system. Has plenty of free parking. Has free wifi and breakfast. The hotel is currently undergoing a remodel (summer 2017) and will be nicely updated when done. The rooms are comfortable and clean. The staff is very friendly and most were multilingual.
