We have stayed here previously because it is central to where our family members live and mom and dad love it. On this occasion we visited to join mom and dad who were stopping there to celebrate their 64th wedding anniversary.

The owners have obviously been busy revamping the hotel since we last stayed there, the visitors lounge has now been opened up and has a more modern feel about it and features some more comfortable sofas etc. The main bar hasn’t changed much though, it still has a lovely country atmosphere and features a nice big real fire with comfy little nooks and crannies and a warm welcome from the bar staff.

The room that our parents were staying in has recently been redecorated in a nice homely manner and featured all of the normal facilities with the additional advantage of being on the ground floor with good wheelchair access, which my mother now requires, having developed some mobility issues of late.

We had a meal in the main restaurant - they also have a carvery style restaurant for those who prefer less formal dinning - where they have a fixed price and a la carte menu featuring a surprisingly wide range of dishes. All of our food was beautifully cooked and arrived in a timely manner with the aid of the lovely Gabby, who is a real treasure. As mom was feeling the cold Gabby promptly turned up the heating and throughout the duration of the meal was friendly, attentive and very knowledgeable about all the dishes that were featured on the menus. She could not possibly been of more help and seems to have mastered the art of being attentive without hovering - a real asset to the hotel! It must also be mentioned that, in addition to marvellous evening meals, their dinners and breakfasts are brilliant too.

Surprisingly enough this luxury, great food and brilliant service all comes at a very comparative rate, it is always worth asking about what deals are on offer, we have always found these very reasonable. It is well placed for a number of market towns around the Peak District and has some lovely grounds attached for walkers of a less adventurous persuasion, making it a great little venue for a nice restful few days in idyllic surroundings or as a base for exploring the local countryside. All in all we cannot recommend this hotel highly enough.

The food was lovely and the staff very welcoming and helpful for most of our stay except when we complained about room above having a gathering in their room till 0200hrs and the noise spoilt the nights stay and the previous evening staff service. Very dog friendly and accepting in the bar dinning area.

Room Tip: Book a room without a noisey pesron above but this will not be known till you stay.

We always have a lovely time at the Boars Head. The new beds are really comfortable, the bedrooms nice and warm, the breakfast is worthy of 5 stars alone. The staff are welcoming and very helpful. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: We stayed in Room 19. The bed was huge and comfy.

Lovely new comfy beds and new lights. Regular visitor and always looked after really well, the staff can't do enough for you. Great choice of food on the special board and the introduction of king prawns onto the main menu is a winner

Stayed: February 2018, travelled on business
