Lovely visit in the time of Covid

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 25 Aug 2021
This is my second visit to the Artist Residence in Penzance and had a great time. The team there is fantastic and the hotel environment and location are brilliant. Given things are tough now with Covid I feel a bit mean about giving only a Very Good rating but this is driven by the ventilation in my room, or lack off. The room is very comfortable but only has one large window with a very small opening at the top. Even on a cool day (it was around 18 degrees most days I was there) the room heated up and became very airless. I'd hate to think what it would be like on a hot day. I think its time to invest in getting that window changed so you can get fresh air in there?

Great 5 night stay in a ‘comfy double’. An 8 minute walk from the train and bus stations, close of shops restaurants and the harbour this is a fantastic base for anyone exploring this part of Cornwall by public transport.

The room was small with a very comfortable bed and a lot of thought had gone into the little extras, like spare cables, bathrobes, roberts radio, fridge and small window seat. Very nice toiletries and an excellent shower were slightly mared by black mold around the base of the shower and the towels could do with replacing with softer ones.

Breakfast was superb, especially loved the rich cappuccino and Eggs Royale on sourdough but sadly no pastries on offer. Dinner was equally good and both the Burger and the Salt and Pepper squid were delicious. For an alternative I highly recommend the Alverne.

This is a stylish, relaxing hotel but its real strength is its superb staff. Helpful, friendly and efficient they really made a lone traveller feel welcome.

TIP. The First Bus company ‘LAND’ bus, from bay B at the bus station operates hourly all week during the summer months and does an excellent round trip where you can drop on and off from for £15.

Lovely lunch in the garden. We shared a salt and pepper squid and then had mussels and prawn tacos. Although we were completely full we couldn’t ignore the gorgeous blackberry cheesecake and the sticky toffee pudding and coffee. Just such a gorgeous place and the staff are lovely. One of my favourite places.

A great location on my favourite street in Penzance; I have been meaning to eat here for ages. Imaginative decor and friendly staff.

The prawns in the tacos were tasty as was the coleslaw. I’d say a little overpriced but nevertheless I enjoyed my lunch there. May return …

Family gathering for 10, lovely private area. Fun vibe and delicious looking menu. Having waited to sit they offered some complimentary cocktails which was a nice service recovery. Food on the whole was very good. Crab starter a triumph, whole sea bream well cooked and delicious, lobster delicate and tasty. Squid was a little soft, and the tortillas which accompanied prawn main were not nice, grey and added a cardboard texture, rather than soft and enveloping. Service friendly and upbeat, well deserved to be so busy.

We visited on a summer break without booking for a Lovely family meal, the mussels were superb, the scallops amazing and my fussy 11 year old smashed her cheeseburger and mocktail.!! Rose house wine better than expected.
Great staff and ambience and decor great.
