St. Ives Holiday Village
Reviewed 7 July 2011

Another lovely holiday at St. Ives Holiday Village, very quiet as out of main season, accommodation spot on, no damp, very clean and comfortable, squirrels & jays on the window ledge looking for breakfast each morning. Fantastic base to explore west cornwall, cheap as chips. Bit fed up of the £9.50 holiday makers running the place down - if you want posh woodland - albeit sterile woodland - off you pop to centre parks for 6 x the price !!!

well, staying here for a short break and am totally outraged by the state of the bungalow im staying in with my 5month old son. Its damp and vile, im just glad,he doesn have to sleep on the poor excuse for a bed his pop up travel cot is just about the right size to fit in the door way of the bedroom, no way would he go in the second bedroom, its worse than the double damp wise and very smelly, plus if we had a full size travel cot we have had to put him in the living room! All in all discusting and would never stay here again!!

Stayed here during the week of 20 June for 4 nights, using the discount offer from The Sun newspaper. Paid £68, and for what we got, we have no complaints. I sympathise with those who may have paid the recommended £399 as quoted in the brochure for the accomodation type we were allocated, however reading others reviews, the complaints seem to indicate an underlying issue with everything being 'old fashioned' and 'damp'. Yes, the moment you drive onto the site, it's like stepping back to the 1970/1980's. But come on, its a Holiday Village - since when were places like this updated, modern, plush, deluxe and out of this world?! Stop kidding yourselves! Damp? The accomodation consists of wooden chalets set in woodland - of course its going to be subject to damp, and yes, our chalet did have a whiff of it. But, it was clean, tidy, basic, and suited our needs for a base from which to travel around Cornwall. The double bed was ample sized (if not slightly hard, but then, what do you expect, memory foam mattresses?). The shower room was clean, there was more than enough hot water, and YES, you could have swung a cat in the shower. The kitchen included a kettle, clean electric fan over, cooker, microwave, the lounge had a dining table, basic 2 seat modern sofa, and a digital TV with Freeview and DVD player. There was ample wardrobe space with plenty of hangers too. There was no queue at reception, and we were greeted by a very friendly Northern gentleman both on arrival and check-out, who made us feel welcome, and who took the time to explain everything about the site and facilities. We did not make use of the 'restaurant' (which I am inclined to agree was nothing more than a room that represented somewhere that factory workers might take their cigarette break), nor did we use the Swimming Pool, the Sauna, or watch any of the 'entertainment' laid on. The on-site shop stocked virtually everything you needed in terms of basics (bread, milk, tea, sugar) and was not expensive. If you intend to be fully self catered, take a trip to the Tesco Express some 10 mins drive away in Carbis Bay, open at the time of writing from 8am-8pm. 5 star hotel with all the trimmings, this is not. Basic, retro, from which to use as a base, 4 stars.

We have stayed at this site previously on a break booked through John Fowler, however this time we were staying through The Sun promotion. Everybody has different ideas of what is acceptable. We dont care what the furniture or decor look like, as long as it is clean and tidy and doesn't smell. This chalet passed on all accounts.

We had a Forestcroft chalet which sleeps 4. It was perfectly adequate for a base for a weekend away. It was very clean and tidy, it did not smell of damp at all. A heater was provided which was useful for the cold mornings. The bathroom was clean, no sign of damp and the shower was very hot and powerful. The kitchen had all the utensils etc required, the only thing that would have been useful if a couple more sockets as you couldnt have the toaster, kettle and microwave all plugged in at the same time!

The beds werent great, but then they never are in caravan or chalet accomodation. There was also a lack of storage space to hang up clothes etc although we werent too bothered by this.

The food onsite was fine, can recommend the pizzas. We had fish and chips from Becks down the road which was great too. The swimming pool was a bit cold, my husband said their showers were freezing and ours were boiling, so not good there! The flume was out of order, but our daughter is too young for it anyway. The adventure park is small, but fine for little ones. The shop sold a good variety of food and fine for emergency supplies. There was free wifi in the clubhouse, or an internet cafe if you required Pay as You Go.

The chalet was a good base for St Ives and the local area, we went to a great beach at Marazion. We would happily return here for a 4 day break, or even a full weeks holiday. I know that some of the older chalets do need upgrading, so make sure you ask if you are booking a holiday here. I would recommend it for anybody as long as you don't expect fancy stuff!

Room Tip: Don't go for the most basic accomodation
