I personally have been to the Chancel several times before but went with friends for dinner based on my recommendation. They absolutely loved it, and so did I, of course! From the warm welcome, the great wine selection, the great menu (the lamb, swordfish, moules...). Always a lovely experience!
Will be back again soon.
Thank you!

A visit in cold January maybe not the best time to judge this wine bar and restaurant as the downstairs room is a bit stark and noisy, However the staff were pleasant and friendly but unfortunately the first two wines we ordered were not in stock, then a bottle of one was 'found', so that was a result. The food was good but again when ordering the starters specials were limited and there was only one fish pie Mains. This was around 7.30 p.m. on a Friday, Everything we did order looked very nice and tasted lovely. Desserts were very good too. Would go again for a lunch, prices were reasonable.

My friends recommended The Chancel and having read the reviews was really looking forward to an enjoyable lunch but regretfully that’s not how it turned out. The first two wines we selected were out of stock (not good for a wine bar), they had no bottled still water and some of the tapas we ordered arrived just warm. This was possibly because all five of us ordered tapas so there was 16 or 18 to be prepared and as they were all delivered to the table at roughly the same time, some must have been sitting waiting for others being prepared. Some of the tapas helpings were on the small side bolstered to appear bigger by placing them on top of lettuce leaves. To wrap it up we found that the bill charged us for the incorrect number of tapas and that the tapas supplement was also incorrectly calculated. The manageress was we felt initially aggressive towards our complaint although she did soften when she realised that they had made mistakes and deducted two deserts as a gesture of goodwill.
As a majority of the reviews are positive we must just have gone on a bad day, although it wasn’t actually that busy.

Visited for dinner, friendly welcome, good menu and specials. Full restaurant provided nice atmosphere. Not ready to order when the waitress asked. I requested a few more minutes; some 40 mins later our order was taken, my only gripe. Once ordered food arrived quickly was piping hot and tasty, Monkfish Scampi was excellent with the curry mayo. Mains of smoky Goulash and Bass were very good, followed by a good selection of cheese. The wine we had was fine and overall a very enjoyable dinner. Top marks for lots of gluten free options. Will revisit.
