Description: El Mexicano sits in the heart of Brighton's theatre district and prides itself on being the only authentic Mexican restaurant in the area. Buzzy atmosphere is fueled by vibrant Latin vibes, music, cocktails and food. Authentic Mexican cuisine and Spanish tapas is the order of the day, including Enchiladas, mole, sea-food paellas and fajitas. After your meal, visit Valentino, the art deco style bar upstairs, which is licensed until 2am.

Booked here for a birthday lunch on a Sunday; worryingly the restaurant was completely empty and when we left still only had one table of diners....we wondered if this was ominous! We needn't have worried as we had a really enjoyable lunch. Starters of Nachos were good (they could have been heated for a little longer as the cheese wasn't very melted). Mains of Fajitas were excellent and portions were very generous...a serving spoon would have been useful but only a minor detail. Churros for desert were sublime and the La Vengaza de Montezuma was gorgeous too. Restaurant and toilets seemed very clean, service efficient but not overly friendly. Prices were fair for the quality of food. Prosecco was great too!

The location of the restaurant is amazing, right next door to the Theatre Royal on New Road. Making it an easy and convenient pre theatre venue. The food is delicious, although on the portions are on the small side (Even for Tapas). The Caesar salad however is huge and very tasty.
Cocktails are well made and reasonably priced.
Definitely worth a visit. Make sure you book if you go on a busy theatre night as it is small and very popular.

I came here on a date and I fell in love immediately...with the restaurant! The food was simply sublime. I had the enchiladas and my date had a burrito and both were very tasty. The decor makes you feel as though you are eating somewhere abroad rather than Brighton High St and the service was second to none. Highly recommended!

The restaurant is situated literally next door from the theatre Royal so is in a great location. Service was warm and friendly and the menu is split between Mexican staples such as fajitas and enchiladas and a traditional list of tapas. We went for the tapas which at 3 for £10 looked a bargain and turned out to be so. Chicken thighs in white wine were great as were the cod goujons with garlic aoli, but the star was the aubergine stew with goats cheese. Less amazing was a slight dull tortilla which needed a bit of assistance from the aoli. All in all a good find and worth a trip.

Went here as a couple on a Saturday night, mainly because the Mexican restaurant a few doors along had an hour wait! I was disappointed there was no ale, only lager for a beer drinker. I was shown a bottle of Mexican "beer" but at over £5 for a half pint bottle i decided on a pint of draft lager at around £4. We shared a starter of 4 triangular shaped fried tortilla things with choriza filling which was very tasty. We both had buritos, again very tasty but I could have eaten two of them, I still felt hungry afterwards. We shared some doughnuts with a hot chocolate dipping sauce, however doughnuts were very sugary, and although filling, were not that tasty. Staff were very attentive and service fairly quick considering how busy they were. My only complaint is the noise level from other diners was high, we couldn't hear each other whist trying to talk. Some acoustic treatment to deaden ambient sound would help this venue. Unlikely to re-visit.
