We visited Brighton for the first time in ages this Saturday, to have a browse around the Lanes, and decided that a return visit to Riddle & Finns was in order, having really enjoyed our two meals here in the past. I now see on Tripadvisor that we last visited in 2009 so this lunch visit was well overdue!
We arrived around 1230 and the restaurant was only half full thankfully, although we were joined on our table later on. We appreciated the usual bread and dips/ mackerel pate, plus bottle of water, and ordered 3 starter size plates to share, plus a portion of fries and a couple of soft drinks. The scallops with chorizo & chilli, and squid with chorizo and chilli (yes we like that combo!) were both wonderful, and our shellfish mariniere was also very good - and a nice change from moules mariniere. My fiancee had never tried winkles or whelks before, so it was a good opportunity to taste these in the mix which also included razor clams, mussels, clams and a couple of crayfish.
The only slight negative to our meal was that our fries didn't arrive with the other dishes, and we had to chase them up - they finally arrived as we were on our last dish. Also twice we were told we would be getting more bread and it only arrived as we finished the third dish. So slightly disorganised service but friendly, and the waitress helpfully explained how to remove the winkles from their shells with the pin provided. The diners next to us had a very impressive looking cold platter, topped with a couple of whole crabs which we would be tempted to have another time.
The total price for our lunch including a tea and a juice was £36.
Would very happily visit again and hopefully won't leave it so long this time - especially now I see they have another branch on the seafront to try out!
