Went there for an evening out with my wife. A good choice on the menu, and very friendly staff. We cycled there, and our bikes were safely stored in the dog kennel!

We popped into The Black Bear for an evening meal, based mainly on the strength of the reviews here. The menu looked like standard pub grub but with an interesting twist. The prices seemed to suggest it was a cut above the average too.

We really wished we hadn't bothered.

Dry, hard to eat chips. We left most of ours.

Undercooked chicken (with raw pink bits) on a bed of way too many slimy overcooked courgettes. We sent the chicken back, only for the waitress to return it saying the chef said the pink bits were fine, "just muscle". Hmmm... when you eat chicken, it's the muscle meat you're eating!

2 sad bits of overcooked halloumi and a mushroom masquerading as a burger.

A dry beef burger between 2 overly thick chunks of white bread. Waaaay too much bread-to-burger ratio, totally the wrong sort of bun for a burger.

A beef and ale pie that admittedly did have lots of meat in it, but contained in a very watery gravy.

We finished our miserable meals and left, very disappointed. We weren't expecting much, just a decent pub meal, but this was over-priced and very poor quality. I can see what they're going for, but they need to find a chef who can actually cook it.

Dear Sir,
Firstly may i apologise for your sub-standard experience. We try to deliver a high standard every time and ultimately this time it seems as though we have failed. Trip advisor gives everyone the platform to be a 'food critic'. It seems as though you take this responsibility very seriously.
A few comments in regard to your opinions. Firstly im guessing the communication between the chef on duty and front of house has gone slightly wayward. The chicken in no way was raw. It was a vein on the bone. We have a temperature probe and there is no way we would cook chicken below 72. The courgettes were slimy and overcooked. Would that be the slow cooked courgettes? Surely someone with an understanding of food would realise to cook a courgette for a long period of time would result in it not being al dente. (as our accompanying vegetables are). The bread that you speak of is a ciabatta roll. Not suitable for a burger? everyone to their own.
Overall you were underwhelmed. I appreciate that and totally respect your opinion. We strive for consistency and in your opinion we didn't deliver. I will pass on all messages and criticisms and we will try to resolve your issues in house so that we do not disappoint again. As you have stated this is an irregular occurrence for us and some of your main points are highlighted in previous reviews as being excellent. I.E. The Pie, the chips, the burger so on.
P.s. in future please do not hesitate to take a member of staff to one side (not just my business) display your displeasure and we can try to do something about it at the time, instead of back and forth messages which ultimately will have no resolution for either party. (i cant refund you or discount or fight my corner now you aren't here!)

all the very best

Arrived on market day and walked from the cricket club car park to the Black Bear for lunch. It was a really nice pub, very clean and the meal was very enjoyable.

Great meal and lovely friendly atmosphere. Black bear is split into bar area and restaurant. A choice of menus is available at lunch times- good selection of ales and all at a very reasonable price. Run as far as I could tell by a couple from the north east. Their chips are the best I've tasted south of Nottingham!

On our way home from a camping holiday, we called in here for lunch.
Very warm welcome. The place was busy, so we sat in the bar area.
Great value lunch menu. We ordered a couple of sandwiches and shared chips. Extremely fresh and homemade fish fingers. We left full and happy!
