Name has changed to The Painswick. Completely restyled and much improved now from the disastrous 88! So, look at the new listing and reviews then book. Part of the Calcot Manor Group of hotels now.

Sadly a disappointment. Now called Painswick Hotel after a refurb.
Plus points. Asparagus fantastic. Great setting and breathes an updated history.
Really good front of house which I suspect her charms are required on a regular basis.
Bad points. Beef Wellington we were advised was rare. What was served was a piece of well done dry meat. No apology.
Service did not get a tip. Says it all.
Wanted an 8 pm but had to have a 7.30 slot but didn't get to table till 8.20!
Bill never arrived so had to go to "checkout"
Sadly memories of a night in Dec 1990 remain in the past.
We won't be recommending here to our friends.
Dinner for 2 including drinks £106 so bit toppy.

We visited friends who were staying overnight for an afternoon drink. It was a warm but windy afternoon and when we retreated inside it was great attention to detail that they had lit the fires. We ended up staying for supper and had an excellent meal in the busy dining room. A nice surprise on a Sunday evening. The food was the high standard we always get at Calcot and the waiter was very engaging despite not being able to remember thank you in Mandarin or Icelandic.

Our children paid for this overnight trip. Hotel very quirky. Roads very narrow. Food excellent. Could not fault.
